Loser. Dumb blonde. Nerd. Wannabe. Jock. Plastic. Ugly. Anorexic or “too skinny”. Fake. Player. Hot. Stupid. Gay. Dropout. Idiot. Dirty. Fat. Weirdo. Creep. Self-centred. Useless. The list goes on. No matter how they’re portrayed, words can hurt. A label is a word or phrase indicating that what follows belongs in a particular category or classification. It’s like handing someone a sticker that says “stupid” and making them wear it. Because of the negative impact and social influence, everyone catches on to the nickname; after a while it becomes almost viral. Bullying causes people to become outcast. This isn’t only for the victims of bullying, but the bullies as well. Studies have shown that people who are bullies as children may be more likely to behave in antisocial behaviour in adulthood, behaviors that include sexual harassment, spousal abuse, or gang-related behaviours (Pepler C. a., 2007). When you give someone a label, it’s almost as if you’re taking the ups and downs of their personality and summing it up to portray who they “really” are. Majority of the time, you’ve got it all wrong. The girl that gets called ugly every day isn’t really ugly, because she’s beautiful in her own way. Bullies only say that because they’re either jealous, or she has a trait that is different to everybody else. By doing this, they’re categorizing who can “hang out” and be friends with each other, sort of like cliques. Majority of this sort of bullying occurs online, otherwise known as cyberbullying. In this case, the bully targets the victim using interactive technological devices. It may take the form of a compromising picture of the victim circulated among his or her peers, or it may be as invasive as chain messages sent to one’s computer and/or cell phone. Technology has made it possible for bullying to take place 24/7, not just during the seven hour school day anymore. Whether they’re forcing someone to change and beat up themselves up physically, causing potential mental illness and downgrading the victim emotionally, or making someone feel lonely in a crowded room as a social environment, it’s all cruelty. People don’t deserve to be treated like this but Child Line saw 4,507 cases of cyberbullying in 2012-13, up from 2,410 in 2011-12, with an 87% rise in contacts about online bullying, a 41% increase in contacts about self-harm and a 33% increase in young people feeling suicidal (Topping, n.d.). This is not okay. “This, this is for all the girls, Boys all over the world, Whatever you 've been told, You 're worth more than gold, So hold you head up high, It 's your time to shine, From the inside out it shows. You’re worth more than gold.” (Nicole, 2012). Lyrics like this mean so much to kids who have been bullied.
