Summary of experience:
Conducting this interview was one of the first interviews that I had ever conducted, so it was very unnerving at first; however, due to Megan’s calm spirit, I was able to become comfortable in the situation and learn about prenatal care and parental preparation for a newborn. Megan and her husband were not expecting a child, so once they found out that they were pregnant, they both began to dramatically change their lifestyle. Megan became more concerned about what she was consuming and even her mental health, because she knew that a poor diet and stress can have detrimental effects on a fetus’s development. Megan did not experience many of the symptoms that most expecting mothers do, which made her pregnancy very enjoyable. As a future early childhood educator, I may be required to go into each of my students’ homes to introduce myself and interview the parents about their child’s knowledge of certain academic related aspects of school, such as their knowledge of the alphabet, their recognition of colors, numbers, shapes, etc. This experience also taught me to be more positive when going into an uncomfortable situation, because doing so will yield more positive results. As a future early childhood teacher, I will be faced with many uncomfortable situations. In fact, the most uncomfortable situation that I could find myself in would be having to defend my pedagogy and prove why it is effective and helping their child learn, even if they are not seeing the results.
