I have always been good with taking notes. I like to take note with details, therefore, if someone is reading my notes, they can easily understand. Perhaps, the note taking strategy I prefer is a combination of Paragraph and Cornell. I have been using this method for while now and it work the fine for me. The Paragraph strategy of taking notes comes in handy when I am doing homework or if I am preparing for a test. The Cornell strategy is very helpful when I just need to look over a certain topic before a quiz or test. I have a bad habit of forgetting details, these two strategies have been proved my life savers. Paragraph strategy is obviously detailed note taking. I write more than what is necessary. This consume most of my time in class and I cannot pay attention to the professor. It would be really helpful if I could limit myself to only necessary details. It will save me a lot of time and I will be able to listen to the professor more. The another technique I would want to develop throughout my college career is to not get thrown by a disorganized lecturer. I am an organized person and I expect others to be as well organized as I am. I cannot get along with a disorganized person and I often loose track when I have to deal with a disorganized lecturer. Although, my sister has given me some tips for getting over this issue, and I would not say that it is working great. I cannot take notes when I am listening a disorganized lecturer because I cannot put the puzzle pieces together and take notes at the same time. It costs me a tremendous amount of time as I have to go back to my notes after class and spend another hour or so in organizing notes. I would definitely want to develop skills to manage my weakness in taking notes with a disorganized

Over the course of the last few centuries, Christianity has been a driving force in the development of western culture. From igniting Crusades in the Middle Ages to introducing new words to the English vocabulary, the Christian religion has had a considerable influence on every aspect of the western culture known today; arguably, the arts and literature specifically were the most heavily impelled by Christianity. As Thomas C. Foster states in his book How to Read Like a Professor, writers of all forms of media are at least aware of the stories of the Bible, and use them in their works, whether it be a story structure or the names of people in biblical anecdotes. Because of this, it is interesting to notice that most classic novels (and even present works) use the idea of Jesus, or the Holy Spirit, in their narratives to create new yet familiar characters. Nathaniel Hawthorne…

In regards to my writing process, there have been some central strategies that I have developed over time and some strategies that I have had for as long as I can remember. For example, one skill that I have developed from high school has been to annotate, mark up, and take notes throughout my readings. I found that taking notes really helps me, not only to remember what I read but to go back and be able to point out something in my reading easily. In addition, it helped me understand the readings better.…

For the past four months, I have been participating in Professor Beadle’s English 115 class in hopes of improving my writing skills throughout the multiple essays and assignments that have been given to us. Looking forward to reach this personal goal of mine, I took the time to focus on each essay individually and seek out the resources that would help me earn a good grade. Over the semester, the course revolved around the topic of monsters which was used throughout three projects: Project Space, Project Text, and Project Media. Each of these assignments challenged my writing capabilities in different ways which ultimately lead to me to better my grammar, analysis, and confidence for future essays. With English being my first language,…

When writing a paper or essay in the past I have used the outlining technique and have found that at the end I had scribbled all over a paper and had to write everything again on another piece of paper. Since being in this class I have become fond of the visual organizers. Kristen has done a great job with them on her videos and section 5.01 in the eLearning solidified my liking to visual organizers. I use notecards that have my introduction, main points, supporting facts, opposing points, refuting points and conclusion. Once I have all my ideas written down I can lay them out and move them around which allows for my brain to be stimulated and produce the best work possible.…

According to a study done by Achieve Inc. in 2005, fifty percent of students that graduate high school are not prepared for college-level writing (Santrock, 2011, 370). While this lack of preparedness roots all the way back to the beginning of learning how to write, a great deal of knowledge about becoming a better writer can be learned in high school English classes if the teachers apply different writing techniques. In chapter eleven of John Santrock’s textbook Educational Psychology and Sharon Zumbrunn and Keegan Krause’s article “Conversations with Leaders: Principles of Effective Writing Instruction” many best practices for teaching writing are given in hopes to provide teachers with numerous ways to teach their students to become better…

The best writing advice that I have received, came from Maggie who had been the instructor for the NUR 125 at the being of last semester. The first piece of advice was to walk away from your paper for a few minutes to get a fresh prospected and two was of course, was to have someone else proof read it. The last piece advice came from a co-worker who had stated to read your paper backwards. I felt the one that had worked the best for me was to walk away and do something else for little while before proof reading it.…

So far, I can say that the strategies I learned in chapter have helped become a better note-taker. Now before I take notes I consider my goals and what I want to get out of my notes. I actively listen to what the professor has to say so that I can understand “is being said, making sense of it, and thinking about it in a way that permits it to be recalled accurately” (Feldman 58-59). For a student currently enrolled in college composition, this technique has helped me gather information more effectively for my essays. My essays are now more precise and provide more…
