Penicillin is an antibiotic that was naturally produced by mold and is now used as a medicine all across the world today. It was one of the earliest discoveries when it was accidentally discovered by a scientist in 1928. Penicillin was an accidental discovery that was found in Fleming's lab. In the three articles “Not so Dumb Luck” by Jesse Lane, “The history of Penicillin” by Mary Bellis and “The Discovery of Penicillin” by Brittany Connors, the authors will show events that led to the discovery and development of penicillin and how it is used today. Even though Penicillin was an accidental drug/medicine, it was an amazing series of events that led up to the great use of the medicine today. In the text it states, “Fleming saw a ring around the mold. After some experimentation he noticed that the ring was actually bacteria free and it was a rare spore called Penicillium Notatum.” (Lane 121) This evidence from the text explains that Fleming accidentally left chemicals in his lab and when he arrived home he noticed that there was a ring of mold that was bacteria free and it had a cell called penicillium. That penicillium notatum soon turned into penicillin. After that discovery, penicillin was now working on how it could be treated for humans and wounded soldiers in war because it kills infectious diseases and bacteria. The text also says penicillin went on to save thousands of soldiers in World War I and it is now used to kill bacteria widely around the world today. Lane 121) That tells us that after Penicillin was an accidental discovery, it was used to help soldiers in WW2, and it has been used to kill infectious diseases everywhere around the world today. Furthermore, Penicillin started to develop when a scientist named Dr.Howard Florey and 3 other colleagues discovered that penicillin could be used to kill bacteria and can kill infectious
