The Effects of Not Pursuing a College Degree
In recent history, there has been media attention placed on very successful business people without college degrees. Steve Jobs, Dave Thomas, Rachael Ray, and Richard Branson are all examples of multimillion, even billionaires, who don’t have a degree. These four business tycoons are atypical examples of your average high school graduate. The obvious disadvantages of not getting a college degree are relatively well known. Things like not getting a better paying job, missing out on promotions, or not buying a larger home. However, the losses of not getting a college degree can have many other grave consequences to the everyday American.
Firstly, the effects in pay for those who don’t decide to continue to college are significant. The salary gap between college graduates aged 25 – 32; versus those who only have a high school diploma was $17,500 in 2013. (Kurtzleben, 2014) And, this income disparity only compounds over time. Every person in the USA should be made aware of the potential seriousness of foregoing a college education; the costs are too high to ignore.
