The main theme is implied at the beginning of the novel to never give up. Throughout the story, the author uses the theme to create suspense in the story. The theme also helps understand how the characters are working and surviving all day long in the heat. At the beginning of the story, the author quotes from Stanley, a new juvenile at the camp, “His cap was stained with blood from his hands. It felt like he was digging his own grave”(Sachar 38). Anansi keeps on sending the turtle back to wash his “hands” as Anansi eats her food. Each time the turtle comes back, his hands are dirty, so he is sent back. By the time the turtle’s hands are finally clean, Anansi has eaten all the food with nothing left for the turtle. This proves that Anansi is trying to outsmart the turtle. For example, the folklore quotes on Anansi, “But by the time he reached the table, Anansi had already finished all the food except for a morsel that was spared for the turtle”(Asante par.11). Anansi outsmarts the turtle this time by eating all the food. When Anansi is invited to the turtle’s home for a meal, he is also outsmarted himself. An example of Anansi being outsmarted by the turtle is, “Dear Anansi, kindly remove your jacket before you touch the food. In our custom we do not eat with our jackets on,” the turtle said. Anansi saw that even the turtle was not wearing his jacket. Anansi removed his jacket which was full of rocks and pebbles and within no time he went rushing up to the surface of the water”(Asante 17). This proves the moral of the story which is to never try to outsmart anyone, or you will be the one who is
