CONNECTIONS REPORT

My connection, not giving up, is shown through these four texts: A Knight’s Tale (directed by Brian Helgeland), Gladiator (directed by Ridley Scott), The Help (directed by Tate Taylor) and 127 Hours (directed by Danny Boyle). A Knight’s Tale shows the connection not giving up when the main character, (William, a young squire with a gift for jousting) forges genealogy documents in order to enter a jousting competition. Despite not being a knight, he gains popularity and wins a number of tournaments. After William is found guilty of not being a knight, his friends say it’s best to run but he replies with “I’m a knight, and a knight would not be so cowardly as to run”. When William was little, he told his father he wanted

He gains fame throughout the games, and despite not wanting to compete, he uses his newfound power to try to overthrow the corrupt emperor. He doesn’t give up, much like William, as they both are born a certain way and they change their stars despite all odds. The theme not giving up is shown with this quote: “Today i saw a slave become more powerful than the emperor of Rome”. The director was showing, again, that we don’t have to follow the path we were born into. This quote was said by Lucilla, the previous emperor’s daughter. It is also shown during Maximus’s final battle against the emperor, when he says “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the armies of the north , General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius, Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the …show more content…
He spends 127 hours (more than 5 days) stuck with limited rations and only his video camera to talk to. He tries chipping away at the rock with a pocket knife, but nothing makes it budge. As he gets more and more desperate, he resorts to cutting off his arm to escape. Like Skeeter, he showed a lot of courage, but in a different way. The director used his video camera to show Aron’s thoughts throughout the movie, as he updated the camera each

A true knight of the round table was defined by his honor and his ability to be a noble warrior. To be commended in such high prestige, one had to abide by a strict code of ethics. This code of chivalry included perseverance, courage, humility, respect, courtesy, and loyalty. Men who could openly live by these virtues were worthy enough to be held in high esteem by the medieval society. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a newly appointed knight of King Arthur’s court aspires to follow the code and thus reach the pinnacle of his knighthood glory.…

In 2000, Ridley Scott directed a movie titled Gladiator after being inspired by a 19th century painting which depicted a gladiator standing atop the bodies of his slain enemies. The chronicles the story of General Maximus Decimus Meridus (Russell Crowe) and begins one night when the emperor, Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), reveals to his son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), that he wishes for Maximus to become his successor. In a fit of rage, Commodus murders his father and declares himself as Marcus Aurelius’ successor. Soon after, Commodus calls for Maximus and orders him to swear fealty. Refusing to pledge his allegiance to the new emperor of Rome, Maximus walks out and Commodus orders for his execution at the break of dawn.…

The last character trait we see present is honorable judgement.…

Maximus and Commodus are two brothers in Gladiator that have two very different personalities. Maximus is the one who has conquered every challenge and every obstacle in his life, and he is not offered the throne after former leader Marcus Aurelius dies. Commodus is given the throne, and takes absolute power. It is seen that he is more of the jealous and envious brother, because Maximus takes nothing for granted and works for everything. I watched Gladiator and I’ll admit that it is a great movie that I would recommend to anyone.…

There is one major difference and similarity in the movie version of A Knight’s Tale and the research I did about the Medieval era. Both versions present feudalism as a big aspect in the Medieval era. Both the movie version and research I’ve done show how the Nobles are better because they are born into an higher estate and have plenty of money unlike the peasants. Both the movie and the Medieval peasants show how they are treated poorly and how they cannot participate in many activities because they are not of Noble inheritance. As for gender roles, Hegleland’s tale shows how Katy’s skills are doubted by the other blacksmiths but William and his crew go to her because they need a blacksmith to repair his armor.…

In the film William was able to change his social standings from being a low class peasant to be a noble knight. Throughout the entirety of the Canterbury Tales there was not a single character who was able to change their social class. This leads me to believe that during the medieval era people were unable to change their social class. Although during this time it was known that peasants would give their children to knights, but they were only able to become squires, that is still a position of servitude. In the medieval era William would not have been able to become a knight even if he did joust against Prince Edward.…

Francis thought he would be able to be a knight but the outcome wasn’t what he expected. He wasn’t erect and confidents, and he wasn’t a horseman. It turned out that his armor was readier for battle than he was, and he soon returned home, slightly wounded or humiliated, possibly both (Sweeney, 2014, pg. 34). Chivalry does not only represent a characters loyalty, willingness to defend others, or honorability, it also reveals quite a bit about a character’s morals. In “The Knight’s Tale” by Geoffrey Chaucer, Arcite is the most chivalrous. He is consistently respectful and honorable. In part two of this story, Arcite had the opportunity to alert the guards of Palamon’s prison escape or he could have simply killed Palamon on the spot. Either of these choices would have eliminated the competition Arcite had for Emily, and assured Arcite as a partisan of Theseus.…
