Good preventative measures are basic cleanliness, such as disposing of food scraps properly, closing bags of dog/cat food, removing unwanted growths (weeds, shrubbery), and clearing your house of any rubbish or trash that may be laying around, as food crumbs are attractive to the nasty buggers. The first step is to recognize the signs of an infestation which include: Black, moist droppings, debris left over from chewing (shells, sawdust), food for pets going missing, or greasy rub marks on counters or floors. After you have confirmed their presence, you should secure all of your food in secure containers and throw away ANYTHING that may have come in contact with them. Remember; disease ridden rodents. If it’s a minor incursion, you can set traps and let them kill themselves. In the case of infestation, you may have to call in an exterminator, or use chemicals to completely annihilate them.
