Beginning my college search about a year ago, I did not understand what I wanted my future to look like. After completing laborious applications, attending organized visits, and drafting meticulous essays, I realized I wanted my college education to encompass a diverse student body committed to a transformative education in an intellectually stimulating environment, and Northwestern University is the perfect school to cater to those standards. Diversity and convergence of different identities are important to me. From its foundations, the school has always opened its doors to people regardless of status, race, gender, and other unalterable factors, and it is meaningful to me that this school explicitly states such an ideal. Being born into two distinct cultures, the rich history of this school makes me believe I will be able to keep both cultures within me while exploring and creating a new one there. I value encouraging and motivating environments as they help to build confidence in my ideas, morals, and beliefs; the academic atmosphere at Northwestern University will surely help me develop those aforementioned morals. The rigorous structure of classes, albeit quite intimidating, will help me to further refine my work ethic and develop skills that will help me beyond college. Close connections with teachers and faculty on campus are crucial in succeeding, as they increase student accountability, and allow for more individualized attention. Due to the 7:1 student-to-faculty ratio, I highly believe this school will excel in this area. …show more content…

But within that priority pie of factors for admission, are race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Over the years, universities have adopted affirmative action while others have banned it. However, even though banning affirmative action may improve dropout rates and graduation percentages, it does not help the bigger problem: lack of diversity.
