Anyone who has spent a prolonged period of time in the wild and has enjoyed the experience of observing the world in it’s natural habitat can see the importance of preserving our wildlife. In Jimmy Carter’s attempt to save the wildlife refuge in Alaska he uses reasoning, evidence, the past, and personal experience in the wild. Carter argues that preserving this extraordinary pure land in it’s “pure, untrammeled state” would be a “Great triumph for America”. Jimmy Carter starts by exonerating the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and describing its natural beauty and magnificence. He does this to get the reader to relate and use their own experience in nature to start a sense of credibility towards what he is writing.…

On 05/29/2016 at approximately 19:11 hours I was in the parking lot of Nick’s Park located at 7929 US 19 in the City of Port Richey. At that time I was assisting officers from the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) as they were in the process of impounding a vessel from an unrelated call. While doing so, I observed a grey 2015 Toyota pickup truck driving around the parking lot loop at a high rate of speed. The vehicle approached the rear of a tow truck summoned by FWC.…

SADD stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions and it is a club that encourages students to confront the daily risks of living in the world today. The advisor, Ms. Corrales, would always pick an issue in society for each meeting and provide us with the best tools to go about handling the issue. The great outdoors is a wonderful place, but the truth is there are some bad people out there. Often hunters will poach illegal animals or fisherman will catch and keep over the legal limit. When this happens someone needs to take action. Those people are conservation officers, officers work for the U.S. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or state bureaus. They enforce laws related to hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation.…

I am very honored to be invited to apply for membership to the National Honor Society. So many activities and experiences in my life demonstrate the key ingredients to be an outstanding member of National Honor Society. I love being engaged in school activities, such as band, pep band, gymnastics, vocal jazz, theatre, Swedish club, swimming, French Club, UWM Horn Choir, and I would like to join additional activities if I could. On a normal day, I come home at around 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and work very hard to receive good grades (4.0 GPA). With this separation, it is always incredibly satisfying to be involved with groups that are so dedicated to conserving lands for species to use. The project that I was so fortunate to work with was the MPG Ranch. This project allowed me to experience the actions of conservationists from a firsthand perspective in order to see for myself the value of humans with the environment.…

Writer Roderick Nash argues that wilderness is the antithesis to the human paradise in satisfying our interests (Nash, xii). Henry David Thoreau advocates that “in wilderness is the preservation of the world” (Cronon, 471). Environmental activist Gary Snyder believes wilderness to be “a person with a clear heart and open mind can experience the wilderness anywhere on earth. It’s a quality of one’s own consciousness” (Cronon, 495). Author Bill McKibben believes there is no wilderness and “we must accept the fact that no area on earth remains pristine or fully free of human influence” (Waller, 545).…

Humanity’s relationship with nature periodically shifts between symbiotic and parasitic. We feed off nature in order to survive, and in exchange, we carefully monitor how our behavior affects the environment and the organisms within it. Responsibility is the price we pay for dominance and sentience. To help fulfill this duty, the United States government established the Wilderness Act in 1954 with the intention of becoming passive “guardians” of nature instead of encroaching “gardeners.” Countless acres of wild lands, henceforth referred to as the “wilderness,” were declared off-limits to American industry and placed under federal oversight; the United States hoped that at least some small portion of nature could be free from the influence…

Conservation Biology is a vital component of the wildlife and natural resources field of work. Increasingly it has shaped my professional interests and career choices over the last several years as its importance is made clear by mounting threats to biodiversity and ecosystem balance. Without the ideology and practices developed in the field of conservation biology many of the species we consider common today would have easily gone extinct in the early 20th century due to a lack of well-considered wildlife management. However, there are many components to achieving the goals of conservation biology. Research, management, and policy are where change is made to help wildlife.…

Areas that have been effected by overconsumption and the conflict this has on nature and society The natural world has fallen victim to the anthropocentric ideal of evolution as the natural world has been overconsumed by society in order for global development. Cronon (1995) states that natures worth is measured and judged by civilisation, claiming that society produces a dualistic world of humans and nature being placed at opposite ends of the spectrum. This ideal is ironic seeing as development cannot be achieved without nature, and nature cannot be sustained and conserved without the protection of society. Cronon (1995) displays the false truths of society as we live in an urbanized world although beliefs are held that our natural home…

Wildlife crime is a particular group of crime. It does not fit "clean" into the different traditional groups, or labeling, often used to describe crimes. groups such as those against people or property crimes. wildlife crimes are sometimes thought about/believed to be victimless because an (able to be seen or picked out) hurt party or victim, at least in the form of a human being, is not present or filing a complaint. However, it has been argued that in the case of wildlife crime, like other victimless crime, (community of people/all good people in the world) is the true victim because these criminal acts lead to harm to, if not the complete destruction of, whole species of animals and plants, by that/in that way affecting hunters, nature (people…
