Northgate Stereotypes

Improved Essays
Northgate high school is where my journey began. The school I went to beforehand, Foothill middle school, is the main school which most of the attendance of Northgate precede from. Given this fact I was privileged to enter this foreign environment with a maintained sense of familiarity and belonging. However this is the only good that came from deciding to enter the campus. The antics of everyday teenage school-life begins.

Drama, drama everywhere. A school flooded with teenagers packed to their brims with hormones and smart phones, a lethal combination. She said X so I will tweet Y to get him to say Z is the only algebraical topics being discussed. I was fooled, my first impressions of familiarity transformed into feeling like an

Oh and Sir, will you please take another ticket and go to the back of the line. This mind-numbing situation is an exact representation of the individuals who congregated the office staff of Northgate and their attitudes. However the office staff is not alone in their inadequacy to do their jobs. It seems as if every teacher with the exception of a select few learned to teach at a daycare center. “Open your books to page 269 and read the following chapter, do not talk or you will be penalized, the test is Tuesday.” A typical opening statement at the beginning of class a teacher would say before sitting down and playing on the computer till the bell rings. As I sat in awe of the lack of communication or effort given by the teachers it become immediately apparent that I have just entered a four-year daycare center run by an angry, depressed group of anti-social drones armed with text books and pink pieces of …show more content…
With my report cards getting thrown in the garbage unopened already knowing the disappointment awaiting inside and my dissatisfaction with the people I was forced to associate with, I left. Accompanied with a home-life that was deteriorating it seemed as the only option. As I continue to reflect upon my experiences with this school I become angry. My blood boils and I begin hammering my keyboard without mercy. I was not a victim to anybody or any entity yet I feel as if I was given a disservice, my attitude since leaving Northgate is and will always remain the following, I want absolutely nothing to do with Northgate high

There is a stark contrast between the working and middle class schools’ interactions between teachers and students and those of the affluent professional and executive elite schools. At the working class school, many of the decisions the teachers made were made with neither an explanation nor the consultation of the students. Teachers also typically spoke to the students disrespectfully: the investigator seldom heard the teachers give an unsarcastic “please,” “let’s,” or “would you”; rather, they would directly order students to shut up. The students, meanwhile, often struggled to stay quiet and were resistant to the teacher’s orders. In the middle class school, the level of control the teacher has depends on the teacher: some are relaxed, whereas others are stern.…

There are various reasons as to why I’m deserving of the Etna-Dixmont School Scholarship. The most prevalent reason is my family history and connection with the town of Dixmont. My father and my grandparents moved to from Massachusetts to Dixmont, Maine when he was in second grade. My grandfather bought a house on Route 9 in Dixmont, and some other land in addition to that. The Dixmont Corner Church was built in 1835, and had an active one room school house next to it that was built in 1808.…

Kali Belonga UG TA: Jessica Hajdukiewicz Grad TA: Liz Newbury Question/Prompt 2 Non-complaint or defiant behavior is a large concern for many teachers and caregivers. These types of behavior, not only can disrupt learning, but also affect interactions between the defiant child and both teachers and peers. When Lora Bird was faced with a seemingly defiant student, she could have gone down two different paths: she could have labeled the child as deviant and sent her to a counselor, or incorporate social-emotional learning into the non-compliant child’s curriculum.…

Zero Tolerance Policies: Preparing School-aged Children for Prison The implementation of the Zero Tolerance Policy in in the early 90s created a whirlwind of issues; mainly that it did more harm than good. This policy was originally aimed to make schools safer by penalizing any student caught with drugs or weapons. This sounds like a good thing; however, through a lot of revisions and revisiting this policy, it became clear that any minor indiscretion would receive the same punishment a large offense would. Another issue surrounding zero tolerance is the class base and racialized nature; this policy contributes the criminalization of young black and Latino students.…
