Aurora borealis or northern lights form when charged particles emitted from the sun during a solar flare travel with solar wind and penetrate the earths magnetic shield and collide with atoms and molecules in our atmosphere. The collusions result in the production of photons which light up the sky. Collisions with oxygen will produce a green aurora. The northern lights are visible from dusk until dawn as long as it is dark and in this case we see a photograph taken by a citizen in Iceland. Scientist Thomas Stevenson explains that the shape of the northern lights depend on where in the magnetosphere the electrons (charged particle) come from and what causes them to precipitate into the atmosphere.
