The North and the South had very different cultures. The North was more industrial. This gives the North a huge advantage. They have factories to make gun and ammunition. “Also, since their railroads were small and not interconnected, it was hard for the South to move food, weapons, and even men quickly over long distances.” Ironically enough, the North had more food for their troops than the South because the South was focusing on cash crops like tobacco and cotton and did not produce enough food to feed the Southern population. “The arsenal in Massachusetts produced over one million rifles for the army and countless rounds of ammo by themselves.” The South was more agricultural. Even though, they only worked on planting their cash crops. Also, there were so many people fighting in the war, a lot of the farmland that was left was never used. “Food was so limited throughout the war, parts of the South suffered from starvation. When people fighting in the army found out that their families were starving, they left to help them out.” In the South, weapons and ammunition were very scarce. People had to bring their own guns.
