Welcome to North View Nursing Home. I am Catrina, the manager of the staff at this nursing home. Our nursing home provides care of 50 residents with a range of different health needs, for example mental health, especially dementia. As you are a new care worker, we will provide you with the appropriate training on how to understand elderly residents’ needs during your induction. Elderly residents may display challenging behaviour during certain time due to certain factors (for example: feeling unhappy or getting confused). Due to this you must be patient and skilled in order to communicate and care for each elderly person properly.
At North View Nursing Home you would be expected to have a good understanding of the needs of the elderly people. The humanistic approach is going to help due to the fact that it focusses on the requirements for existence. As a new member of staff you should understand that we apply the humanistic perspective. This means that we make sure that all residents’ physiological needs are met, this means providing them with food and water; we also make sure that their safety needs are met, that is by locking main doors at night and making sure …show more content…
I will introduce you to Rebecca. Rebecca is one of the residents that have dementia. Due to this fact, Rebecca gets confused sometimes because she can’t remember the people working with her. As a new member of staff you should understand that we apply Behaviourist perspective in our setting. If Rebecca displays challenging behaviour, then we would use negative reinforcement to stop the poor behaviour and extinguish it, we do this by telling her that she not allowed to go to the park on the weekends. If she stopped displaying that behaviour and instead displayed better behaviour, then she would be rewarded by allowing her to go to the park
