This involved the development of samples that identified all incidents where women were documented as being sole perpetrators from the 695 perpetrator profiles derived from previous studies, tracing incidents back in time to 2007 where this had not been done before and tracing all incidents forward to November 2011. This resulted in samples of 34 sole female perpetrators in heterosexual relationships (Hester, 2009). As the huge majority of the 695 incidents in the earlier studies involved male only perpetrators, an arbitrary sample of 34 sole male perpetrators were selected to permit straight comparison with the sole female perpetrators sample. The sole male perpetrator sample was also traced back to 2007 and forward to 2011.
