In November 2007, North Side police introduced an automated system for recording and connecting domestic violence occurrences across police districts. Utilizing this database the previous domestic violence study established a representation of incidents, attrition and actions of police across four police stations and in relation to four time periods – November 2007, January 2008, March 2008 and May 2008. The follow up study developed 695 perpetrator longitudinal outlines and analyzed the 1,890 incidents associated with these people. The 695 profiles comprised tracking of 365 perpetrators from attrition study to deliver a three year outline, joined with a further 300 domestic offenders sampled from the 1first week of November 2007 and traced until July 2008.

This involved the development of samples that identified all incidents where women were documented as being sole perpetrators from the 695 perpetrator profiles derived from previous studies, tracing incidents back in time to 2007 where this had not been done before and tracing all incidents forward to November 2011. This resulted in samples of 34 sole female perpetrators in heterosexual relationships (Hester, 2009). As the huge majority of the 695 incidents in the earlier studies involved male only perpetrators, an arbitrary sample of 34 sole male perpetrators were selected to permit straight comparison with the sole female perpetrators sample. The sole male perpetrator sample was also traced back to 2007 and forward to 2011. An additional 34 incidents were arbitrarily selected from incidents where both sexes had at one time been documented as perpetrator and victim, as other cases they were tracked back six-years from 2007.
