The people of North Platte provide the soldiers with mental support as well as physical support. For instance, they were always smiling at the soldiers. The soldiers felt like they were meeting their mothers like they were home. Even though it was only a ten or twenty minutes stop, the woman of North Platte made sure to let the soldiers feel the warmth of home. They treated them like they were their sons (218). Word got out, and many people heard about North Platte Canteen, so many people from all around North Platte came to help in the Canteen either physically or send money to the Canteen. For instance, from 125 communities and little towns that some of which disappeared from the map, many people came to help with the Canteen (50). During the WWII the government gave every individual a stamp which granted their food share. While the rest of the country were enjoying their shares, North Platte took some of their shares and gave it to the soldiers. Even though the government told the people don’t buy what you don’t need the people of North Platte would buy more than their needs, and they would give it to the soldiers (72-73).
