North Dallas Shared Ministries is an interfaith community of volunteers providing charitable assistance to families in need. This organization assists people and families living in 20 zip codes in Northwest Dallas with food, clothing, financial help and medical needs. They provide several services and programs for low income families such as a food pantry, Financial Aid services, clothing, medical center, dentist, school uniforms and supplies, rent/utility advances. They also offer transportation such as bus tickets or gas vouchers. Food pantries and homeless shelters are over capacity because of the increased level of poverty in our community. Some might believe families who live beneath the poverty line should be considered a personal problem; something the family should have to deal with on their own. When in fact, poverty is considered a social problem. Interacting with other minorities and families in a lower social position relative to the economic sector has opened my eyes to the demoralizing impact of deprivation and poverty on families. These low-income families who are living right here in our community have significant needs needed to be addressed. However, there aren’t many people willing to actually step up for a kind and selfless act and help take care of those needs. Poverty is deficiencies in necessary material goods or desirable qualities needed to live a healthy lifestyle. These people who live in poverty are often neglected; they lack the access to healthy food, proper clothing and sufficient help. That is where NDSM come into play! With the help of this organization, families are capable of having food, clothing, and everything else that is necessary to maintain a healthy life. This experience helped broaden my perspective on less fortunate families and opened my eyes to the needs of my community. Before volunteering, I didn’t stop to realize how many families in my community were going to bed hungry every night or how many children were deprived of food. During my volunteer experience, I had the chance to meet and help a lot of families who aren’t as fortunate as the families I meet on a day to day basis. Without charity, the homeless might go a few days without food, or a struggling mother’s child might have empty bellies for the night. Giving back to your community gives you the opportunity to ease the struggle that these individuals and families have to go through every day of their lives. It was a great opportunity for me to learn more about the challenges that people are facing in our community. It allowed me to look beyond my sheltered life and be more grateful for what I have. This organization also taught me that it doesn’t take much to make improvements in the community we live in. My work probably won’t change the world, but at least it could help a small portion of
