North Carolina Trip

Every time I remember my family vacation to North Carolina, I recall the one lesson I learned on that invigorating trip: respect nature. The Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina attract thousands of hikers annually due to their beautiful, lengthy hiking trails. However, remaining on the beaten path is more crucial than one might assume.
Having driven the long route to the trail, my father, sister, brother, and I hopped out of our green minivan and purchased water bottles and park maps from the information kiosk located at the start of the trail. The thirty minutes we spent deciding which path to take made me incredibly twitchy. Having finally decided on a trail and eager to start hiking, my sister and I ran ahead of our father and older brother. Jogging to catch up with us, our dad chastised us, “Keep pace with your brother and me to keep from getting lost or hurt.” Slowing down a bit, we continued the trek up the beautiful mountain for what seemed like hours to my young childish mind.
Having walked two miles without encountering any remarkable occurrences, my eight-year-old self became quite restless. Noticing a gap in the brush just large enough for me to squeeze my way through, I begged my father to allow us to explore the forest off the path. After

Frozen in fear, I stared at the deadly serpent for a moment. As it slithered into pouncing position, I rapidly spun myself 180 degrees and sprinted toward safety. Running faster than I ever had before, I swiftly cut in and out of trees until I found my way back to the trail and saw my dad. My brother and sister, unaware of the snake, asked why I sprinted back to the path. Breathing heavily and secreting loads of adrenaline, I told the story of the close call I had with a huge venomous snake, which had always been one of my biggest

Many people believe that Eastern Oregon is void of beauty. The mountains are bare and the air is dry. However, if these folks would follow me to the Snake River for a fishing trip, I think they’d change their minds. If they were to join me on the river, they’d hear the sound of motor boats traveling up the water, and they’d smell the engine exhaust and hear the laughter of the fishermen.…

The neighborhood was noiseless, and the sky was pitch black, for there had been no moon on that summer morning in June. My mother and father started our car and waited for Sofia,my sister, sean ,my friend, and me to get inside. It was time to leave our dull suburban home in San Jose, and drive to the beloved National Park, Yosemite, to hike Half Dome. On the car ride there I had slept, but awoke right when we had gotten into the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Looking outside of the window and noticing all of the evergreen trees was surreal for me, as I rolled down my window a strong smell of pine and fresh air poured into the car.…

As the colors of the leaves are changing and the temperatures beginning to drop, hiking Kennesaw Mountain for the first time was definitely an exhilarating feat for someone who does not work out one bit. Beforehand, I decided to “Google” some information about the story behind this historical site and see what I could get out of this assignment. Needless to say, I found quite a bit of information about this National Park and all that has happened there. As I was climbing the rugged mountain, I thought about all the history that has occurred in a place that I call home. All this history began when the Cherokee people decided to make their home into what is now Cobb County and Kennesaw National Battlefield Park.…

Of the 1,500 people who start the thru-hike, only 500 or so people actually finish it (Johnson, 2007, p. 24-30). Less than 10,000 people have finished the long, grueling and punishing through-hike on the Appalachian Trail. Through hikers are only a small minority of the Appalachian Trail hikers. Many people enjoy the Appalachian wilderness. These people could be anyone looking to get away from it all and experience nature's true beauty, but this beauty that they all enjoy is in…

The Great Smoky Mountains I had never smelt the mountains before. When I was planning my trip everyone who had been there before said, “Oh, that smell! You’ll never forget it!”. Managing to ignore the voices in my head that tell me I’m not capable, the determination inside of me grows; I wanted to prove myself wrong. While droplets of sweat brim over the tip of my nose, aching muscles bicker in rebellion with each step. I came to a stop as my neck stretched back to examine the enormous mountain that towered over me. As the sun set behind it, an ominous silhouette stared back and cast a shadow over a trail leading into darkness. My friend’s eyes widened in wonder as I commanded, “Hike on!”…

The Wyoming backcountry is stunning. There is an infinite blanket of trees in every direction. The sky has two moods either happy: blue with cotton ball clouds or angry: a stormy scary black color. The air smells like sage and pine -- fresh and crisp. July, 2015, along with 11 close friends, 2 counselors, and a trip leader I went hiking in the backcountry of Wyoming on a 6 day backpacking trip.…

I grew up in a church filled with traditions. One of these traditions was started by our youth pastor’s father: Wilderness Trail. Throughout my elementary years I would hear talk of the annual youth trip up to Virginia, and in sixth grade, I finally had the chance to go. Wilderness Trail is a backpacking ministry located in the town of Troutdale. Each summer, groups come and go on a five day backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail.…

It was a definite change of scenery to be immersed in nature with lush greenery, crisp air, and ocean views instead of the normal classroom scene. I liked that this experience was a chance to interact with my colleagues and learn who they are on a personal level subsequent to grading their three-minute stories the previous Fridays. From this hiking experience, I learned the value of teamwork, effective communication, and what encompasses wholesome leadership as well as what can transpire when there is no leadership. As like all experiences, there are some parts I cherished and others not as much.…
