North Carolina Math Competition

In my 9th grade year I achieved first place in the North Carolina regional math competition this was an event that utterly changed who I am and resulted in the person that I am today.

My teacher was at the front of the classroom while I was in the back barely paying attention. That was until I heard my teacher say something that made my ears perk up. My teacher said “... enter the math competition and you will automatically get a 100 on the final exam for this class”. I was purely ecstatic at this proposition, so after class I went ahead and joined the preparatory club for this competition. About a month and a half of rigorous studying later, I found myself at 6:30 in the morning sitting at the direct back of the bus by myself trying to figure out if

They started by announcing 10th place which was a girl at my school who was in 11th grade at the time and seemed like one of the best academic persons at our school. I thought to myself wow I didn't even make it into the top ten and was slightly disappointed. After a few minutes of people walking up stage and shaking hands with the director, he got a microphone and started announcing the first place winner of the competition. When I heard my name come from the speakers I almost fainted. I looked around me trying to see if anyone else who had the same name stood up and I saw no one at all. So I stood up with pins and needles racking through my body and feeling as if I was about to fall over. I walked over to the director and shook his hand. He then gave me a plaque that said I had won the regional math competition in North Carolina. I was so amazed and so happy at that moment. I realized who I was at that exact moment and that I was meant to grow up to become someone who worked hard on science and math. I had fundamentally changed into a new person as well as a person who had a direction in

My Own Cultural Clash All parents have high hopes for their children, they want them to become a: lawyer, doctor, engineer, or something along those lines, most adults just want their children to be successful. My career was practically chosen for me as early as the 3rd grade. I stood above everyone in the crowd, literally, I was 5’4”. I’m tall and black, so everyone had assumed I was either heavily into some kind of popular sport, but stereotypically the question I was most frequently asked is “Do you play basketball?”. What made it even worse is that my mom expected to me play basketball, in fact that’s what she would tell my whole family.…

In eighth grade, I decided to audition for GMEA District Honor Band. The audition itself was nerve-racking, but I made it and was able to get fourth chair. This was one of the greatest experiences of my life because I got to spend all day studying music with others who shared the same passion as I do. Last year was my first year in marching band. At the end of the year at the school's spring concert, I was awarded the Wildcat Rookie of the Year, which was a huge achievement for my.…

But when she got to mine and another student's award, she said that it was going to “make her cry”. As she called my name though, I felt really accomplished and proud with myself. I worked hard to improve my musical skills and technique that year so getting that award felt really good. After we finished with the awards, the class went into the band room and took some pictures there while we were waiting for the bell to ring. I was a much more awkward person back then so that was weird.…

I think one of the times when I was at my best happened two years ago in my Junior year of high school. Our Interact Club was about to start a new fundraising project for a local organization called Adopt-a-Family. Basically, we would raise money and then buy Christmas presents for local families that were in need. The fundraiser was called “Penny Wars” in which each grade level would compete to raise the most money.…

    Math Challenge

This math challenge was easy to approach, because I realized that the lines O1O, O1O2, and O2O1, form a triangle, I realized that if that triangle was a right triangle I could find the distance between O1, and O. To prove that triangle OO1O2 is a right triangle I used the radii of O1, I realized that the sides of triangle PO1Q, O1P, and O1Q, are radii, and therefore they are equal. Since they are equal, the triangle PO1Q, is an isosceles triangle. In an isosceles triangle the base angles are congruent , so that means that angle Q is equal to angle P, since angle Q is 45 degrees, angle P is also 45, and because a triangle has 180 degrees, the remaining angle(O1) must be 90 degrees. This proves that the triangle PO1Q, is a right triangle, and…

Journal 1 (A situation that I shared empathy with another person and how it worked out) Today, in another one of my classes, we received our marks of our midterms that we had written a couple of weeks ago. As the teacher was handing them back, I was really nervous and afraid of the mark I’d receive, because I did not feel confident with how the exam had gone. The teacher finally handed mine back and I was so relieved and happy; I had passes the exam. My friend sitting next to me then received her exam back and she looked devastated. She turned to me and asked how I did and when I responded that I had passed, she seemed a little embarrassed; she had failed the exam miserably.…
