North Carolina Governor's School: Personal Narrative Analysis

My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life. I was certainly challenged, both vocally in my Choral Music ensemble, and intellectually in my Area II and III classes. I had already been introduced to countless new ideas and thoughts, including the genius and confusion of contemporary choral pieces and ideas of privilege and perception. My time at Governor’s School showed me that I could handle myself, and that I could even make decisions or change the world around me without necessarily needing the help of a teacher or parent. …show more content…
Governor’s School was a place filled with immensely talented and hardworking people, all of whom were extremely gifted intellectually. Every person I met there had an inspiration and a backstory that led them to the success of attending the program. The people at Governor’s School were united by their passion for their respective areas of study, but were otherwise a very diverse group of students. During those five-and-a-half weeks, I was able to connect with people that would not have been accepted in my small town. I felt comfortable sharing parts of me that I couldn’t have in the hallways, classroom, or cafeteria of my high school. Everyone I met inspired me in some way – through their work ethic, compassion, or

I have always been independent, but I fully seeked independence when I was 16 years old. This was the year of 2016, and this was the year that my life changed; I was forced to grow up and learn how to be more independent. The first step to my seeking of independence was turning 16 years old and getting my driver’s license. This meant I was finally able to go out on my own and not rely on others to take me places anymore. In the year of 2016, I also began taking classes at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute to earn college credits.…

I attended Governor’s School East in the summer of 2015. At Governor’s School I found some of the most accepting people with true intellectual curiosity and a zest for life. These people are what made me who I am today. Throughout all of high school I felt a loneness that hung so heavily I contemplated suicide multiple times. I had allowed myself to view the world through monochromatic glass so that all I ever saw was singularities.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

I entered the Holmdel school system when I was three years old. In my young years, I was a very shy person; I wasn’t one to hang out with my classmates outside of school, or connect with new friends in general. Despite my early willingness to seek solitude and reluctance to meet people, my school became a friendly community for me. I can comfortably say that I’m a better person because of the peers I grew up around, the teachers I learned from, and the parents that cared for me. My adolescent interest for computers came out of those people - the friends who introduced me to video games, the instructors who programmed in their spare time, and the father who came from a technological background himself.…

When I interviewed with Mount Holyoke College, the Associate Director of the Frances Perkins Scholar program, Nichole Reynolds, shared with me, “Attending this school can be a transformative experience if you allow it to be.” The words that she spoke were the guiding force behind the ways in which I approached my junior year. The 2016-2017 school year has been the most transformative year of my academic life thus far. Indeed, I stepped out of my cocoon and forced myself to stretch; no matter how uncomfortable or the amount of fear that I felt, I pushed towards new experiences that helped to construct the person I was becoming. First, after much consideration, I officially declared my self-design major in Black Geographies with the support of my academic advising team.…

The best way to start this brief summary of my experience in the Helms School of Government would to go back to freshmen year. I went into college wanting to be a double major in Zoology and Zoo and Wildlife Biology. That was something I had thought I wanted to do and thought God wanted me to do. Although my mother, knowing me and knowing my favorite classes in high school were always Government or History classes, told me to take Government 200. Well, after the first semester I took both Government 200 and Biology 101.…

During the course of my high school career, I have come to the realization that going through high school is like winning a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Everyone has a different experience with their golden ticket. Some are repeat winners and some leave the experience too soon. When I walked through the doors of Council Rock South High School South in the summer of 2013, I was unable to anticipate my future ventures, nor could I predict that my belief would be challenged by the loss of three classmates.…

When I think back to elementary school, I always reminisce about Mrs. Johnson’s 4th grade class. She was my favorite teacher during my youth at Guy B. Teachey Elementary School. Mrs. Johnson, to begin, was in her 25th year of teaching when I was in her class. During her time, she taught one year of 3rd grade and then taught 4th grade for her remaining years. She had a genuine love for North Carolina captured by her weekly piano playing of North Carolina songs.…
