In the American culture, most people are direct and get straight to the point— varying on who the person is, but in one form or another they are not tip toeing around the subject to avoid any disrespect. This is because in the American culture it is not considered rude, thus causing a barrier in the language between Americans and the Japanese. To be quite frank, this means the Japanese may think we are a rude and disrespectful. Conclusively, due to American and Japanese’s differentiating ways of speaking, it creates different views on how to go about things because of separate…
In the article, Racism American Style and Resistance to Change: Art Education’s Role in the Indian Mascot Issue, by Elizabeth M. De La Cruz, illustrates the negative effects of non-Native Americans organizations from using Indian mascots. She points out that such organizations that use Indian mascots place a negative label on the Native American reputation by imposing ignorance of their culture. She provides various examples in which Indian mascots leads to negative stereotyping and misrepresentation of the Native American culture. In full agreement to the author, I believe that Non-Native American organization that use Indian mascots have negative consequences. The use of Indian belongings or images without proper acknowledgement of their culture can lead to disrespect the Native American culture without meaning to, misrepresenting them, and creating a negative or false stereotyping.…
Keeping eye contact and holding an average conversation has fallen by the wayside. We Americans pride ourselves in possessions because it's often easier to talk about what we have, rather than deeper conversations such as who we are and what kind of person we want to become. The film Minority Report, and the novel, Fahrenheit 451, agree that we spend so much time alone in our personal bubble of technology that we have lost touch with reality and have passed…
Defining what American culture is today can be somewhat difficult in today’s society. American culture is always fluctuating. The United States has traditionally been referred to as a "melting pot," welcoming people from many different countries, and hoping to find a better means of life. However, others refer it to as a “Salad”; the ingredients are there, but not everything mixes well. America is full of rich culture, but not every person living in America understands cultures besides their own.…
I had a wonderful time doing my book report on “American Cultural Patterns: A cross-cultural Perspective”. The book is about observing American culture from an outsider's perspective, and comparing it to other cultures from across the globe. In this book, American culture refers to pattern and behavior of the mainstream. In this book, American culture mainly refers to white males for they make up the majority of America, however, it is not exclusive to them. This book is not about Americans changing the way of think when interactions with foreigners, but instead to learn and see their own patterns.…
Physical contact viewed in her culture is a kiss on each cheek. But not all Canadians did this. Ethnic diversity of Canada means that rules of social propriety are quite complex. There are certain general expectations. Greeting, except in formal settings, does not require touching in the form of embraces or handshakes.…
Africa, a continent made up of 54 different beautiful countries, which has very different characteristics and wealth. Cameroon, located in the center of Africa, is where I am from. I was born and raised there. I grew up with a lot of family around, but I am the only child of my parents. I am proud to say that I was raised by my family.…
What is an American? Well, in my opinion I believe that an American is someone who sets out for the American dream. American's are people who convey American like traits and live by the culture. We stand up for what we believe in and we live by the rules of the government. An American has the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”…
Hindus and Muslims own many of the shops in the area I live in so going out to buy vegetables or go to get your eyebrows done is an opportunity to have an encounter with different cultures. During these encounters, it is common to hear people from other cultures interact and greet others in their respective language. The frequent encounters encourage people from other culture to want to be able to greet each other in each other’s language. There are other social interactions such as when Muslims have their annual festival at a local park and anyone from different cultures are invited to attend and…
What makes a “true” American? This question has been around, as colonists have been on American soil. Due to its complex history, America has struggled to simplify their individuality to a concrete conclusion. The idea of a “true” American identity has remained abstract throughout history until present-date. The fact that America consists of numerous cultural groups, affects its ability to create one solid American identity.…
In my opinion, the Narcirema culture is extremely different from any culture I have ever studied. To me it almost seemed like they have all these charms, and magical potions to keep them well. They go to such great lengths to take care of their bodies by doing these rituals. Yet, they try to avoid pregnancy at all cost by limiting sex around the phases of the moon. If a pregnancy happens to occur the women have to cover up, and hide their body so other people don’t take notice.…
A lot of how I view the world originated from my childhood. I grew up in the Jamaican culture. Both my parents were born and raised in Jamaica and emigrated from the island to live in Canada. One huge aspect of being Jamaican is religion. Christianity and church was heavily engrained in me and my sister since birth.…
Field Project 3: Norm Breaching Experiment Huan Pham 11/19/17 A society is enriched with cultural values and norms. Therefore, members of the mentioned society subsequently and collectively follow the written and unwritten rules in order to be functional members of their society. Because every society has an exclusive set of rules that is different from each other, how a society functions is going to be different from each other as well.…
I think cultural differences are an important part of non-verbal communication. There are many gestures and expressions that are commonly practiced in one culture, that may be offensive in another. Diverse standards in regards to the proper level of assertiveness in communicating can add to cultural differences. The textbook signals that leaders must avoid becoming defensive and should try to understand how the other person perceives the situation. Defensiveness can “hurt the entire team or organization because it includes a tendency to place blame, categorize others as morally good or bad, and generally question others’ motives” (Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy, p. 291).…
Upon several articles, it is suggested that the leader become familiar with the audience; bring some excitement, and know the subject well enough to have some eye contact with the audience. Notably, all nonverbal communication is contrary. Every grin is not a display of arrogance just as every smile does not mean approval. Body language is a powerful tool that used in any activity that would involve communicating and interacting with other people.…
