First, certain intellectuals argue that the processes occurring in the current social environment produce a situation where individuals are free to create their own eating habits and choices from the vast selections of food products within supermarkets, restaurants, retailers, farmers markets, etc, (Beck & Beck-Gernsheim 2001). Therefore, in distinction to previous historical periods, individuals in society are faced with a widespread variety of edible products, allowing for a diversity of healthy options that were unattainable until the 20th century. Due to advancements in transportation methods and globalisation, North America has few limitations when it comes to seasonal and international foods, such as bananas, soy, and many others, (Winson, …show more content…
Regulation B.01.009 lists thirty-six ingredients whose components need not be listed on the label. Most of these ingredients contain a wide variety of chemicals in their make-up. Hence, Canada, like the U.S.A, has labels that do not inform the consumer of all the chemicals in food stuff. According to Sarjeant and Evans, the average Canadian consumes approximately 1,800 food additives per day, (1999. 142). More importantly, the average Canadian is only aware of ¼ out of the 1,800 food additives consumed on a daily basis, (1999, 142). According to the book, Hard to Swallow: The Truth about Food Additives, artificial colour is a blanket term used to describe any one of a number of colours, which the government permits in foods. Food manufacturers, under the Canadian Food and Drugs Act, are not required to list the chemicals used to produce any of the following products: food colour preparations, flavouring preparations, artificial flavouring preparations, spice mixtures, seasoning or herb mixtures, vitamin preparations, mineral preparations, food additive preparations, rennet preparations, food flavour-enhancer preparations, compressed, dry, active or instant yeast preparations,
