In the middle of the movie my dad pulled out a soda and a bag of chips from my step mom’s purse. This brought some attention to us because my dad made noise while opening up his snacks. Some of the other people there were laughing, because they found it funny that my dad had carried his own snacks into the theatre. There were also people who didn’t think much of it as in other cases. The ones who found this funny were some teenagers who were sitting in back of us. I think that the reason to this is because they were younger. To me this was a norm violation because I always thought that everything should be bought there at the theatre, because this is what we had been doing until this day. My dad not buying his snacks to the movie theatre was a folkway because it’s a norm not strictly enforced. These norms are like rules which we often don’t break and when it is broken it is unusual to us. The reaction of the people who witnessed my norm violation allowed me to know them a little more. I learned that some people do find it disturbing to turn and see a teenager eating loudly with their mouth open. While others don’t pay attention to it because they are either used to it or just simply don’t care. Being a part of this norm violation helped me understand that peoples reaction depend on their age and their ethnicity/ culture as well as their status. What can seem like a norm violation to one culture to another can be totally normal. The values of a culture can be different than others, but there can also similar norms.
