Norms In College

Decent Essays
At Davis, I have become accustomed to going to social events. School games just to show school spirit. And support with my friends. I also love to go bowling and attending tea meeting we have in Wellman. I have also been going to the movies here on campus every Friday, if I have the chance to attend. One of the norms that I find helpful here on campus is study groups and going to dinner with my friends. I enjoy the social, aspect of just going places on campus with friends and to visit the cows. We made it a thing now just to visit and talk to them as if they could understand.

Engaging with other students is inevitable and getting involved on campus is the greatest way to learn experientially. Mentioned earlier, students that attend Minerva travel yearly, which sounds exciting, but there is not any communication between other students that attend Minerva as well. “Traveling internationally does exhibit an experience that colleges and universities cannot compare to, but that still does not allow students to get engaged with their colleagues in the community around them” (LaFlore 2). Another aspect of college is to network and for students to familiarize themselves with their home, for example, “I am glad traditional college campuses have dorms because that is a way for me to interact with people in the same year as me and I can befriend my roommate and suitemates. Usually, there are floor meetings that allow students to introduce themselves to their peers and that is a great way to interact with the community” (LaFlore 2).…

The Bowdoin College Academic Honor and Social Code is a thorough and respectable code of ethics that I feel all Bowdoin students should try their best to abide by. While reading the Academic and Social Code during orientation and moments ago, I noticed that a lot of the elements in this communal agreement involve a degree of trust. The College trusts its students to live righteously while simultaneously students trust the College to provide an environment in which it is possible to embody the expectations set for them. With each set of rules however, comes areas of disagreement and discord. In the Academic Honor Code, section 3, paragraph 3, it states, "Plagiarism involves the intentional or unintentional use of...".…

Social norms. Social norms are rules of behavior that are considered acceptable by a group or society, but what if the social norm happens to be oppressing and discriminating an entire race of people based solely on the color of their skin, how is it still considered right? And what if half of a nation relied on this idea of social norm in order to power their economy? This social norm I have described was slavery. And the half of nation I’m referring to that depended upon the continued idea of this social norm in order to power their economy was the south during pre-civil war times.…

Attending Buena Vista University it seems as if everyone plays a sport, the small campus and even smaller student body creates an environment that puts an emphasis on athletics. In my three years attending Buena Vista, I have had two different roommates, both athletes themselves. Living with athletes creates challenges and opportunities that are special to athletes. For a washed up high school athlete getting the chance to live vicariously through some of my best friends at the collegiate level is an experience like non-other. One of the biggest concerns when first heading off to college is will you be able to make friends.…

When we are young and commit mistakes, it is easy to blame on parents, teachers, or siblings in order to mentally make ourselves feel better about our own fault. In college, I will not be able to blame anybody for missing registration to classes, or missing an important deadline. Taking full responsibility for my actions will give me a hard time in my college career, since I have never been completely by myself. However, without a doubt, acting responsibly is the quality that gives meaning to our lives and allows us to develop personality, establish profound relationships, and get an advantage in the labor market. Additionally, the only way to overcome the fear of taking responsibility of myself is to start realizing that things will change…

"Getting Ahead of the Disruption” Peaceful Setting College, although a private institution, shared aspects of political influence. The college is located in a small college-centric town in a Mid-Western US state with an impression and expectation of academic excellence and higher learning. The college benefited from a substantial endowment that provided them the financial resources to see the institution through difficult financial times (Manning, 2013). Although the college was not in a current crisis, administrators were concerned the current financial and educational model may no longer be supportable. In an effort to bring change to keep the college financially an educationally viable, the college began to explore innovative ways to approach the education they deliver now and in the future (Manning, 2013).…

Culture of Respect strengthen schools by providing a framework to assess and improve efforts to eliminate sexual violence from their campuses. They provide tools for all constituents at colleges and universities as they answer the call to ensure students safety to continue their higher education. Culture of Respect was founded in 2013 by the parents of college students who were concerned of the high rate of sexual assault on college campuses and the lack of comprehensive resources for survivors, students, administrators and parents trying to respond to prevent future incidents on campus sexual assault. There are many challenges which students, especially those of us from The Honors College, face in living honorably. As students of The Honors College, we are given many responsibilities and duties. We are required to have rigorous and challenging curriculums along with becoming leaders within the communities we are part of and it is easy to feel overwhelmed by all of it and find it extremely difficult to keep up. This pressure could result in many considering some dishonorable ways, like cheating and plagiarizing, to help themselves deal with it all. These, however, are very short term and horrible ways to help yourself keep up with your responsibilities due to both, their dishonorable nature and their tendency to make things worse later on.…
