The world today is filled with many secrets and many more who wish to know them. But what happens when someone who doesn’t fully understand the capabilities of the information they have access to has access to it? Most of the time, nothing good! This gaining of sensitive information has become increasingly easier with the advent of certain cybertechnologies. And therefore, exponentially more people know what they don’t understand. Is it really alright for people who happen upon sensitive information or handle it to release it to the public through the internet? When is it okay to whistleblower and when is it not okay? This has to do mainly with when is it okay to release sensitive information when you or someone you know is handling it at a place in your work. The rules I found for while blowing come from a man named De George. All of this information can be found on page 116 in the ethics and technology book. The steps for moral allows go as follow from the book:
“ (a) the product will do “serious and considerable harm” to the public ,(b) the engineer(s) have reported the “serious threat” to their immediate supervisor and (c) the engineer(s) have “exhausted the internal procedures and possibilities” within the company, including going to the board of directors, having received no support from their immediate supervisor.”(Ethics book)
The moral requirements to whistleblow go as followed straight from the ethics and technology book: “De George argues that one is morally required to do so when (a) The engineer(s) have “accessible, documented evidence that would convince a reasonable, impartial, observer that one’s view of the situation is correct and (b) the engineer(s) have “good reasons to believe that by going public the necessary changes will be brought about. ”” (Ethics
