My character name is Norman Bates from one of the most famous horror films of all time Psycho. I chose to do my research on the 1998 version (Van Sant, 1998) because I knew that it would be in color and for me color helps bring out small details better than black and white. This is a little overview of Norman. Norman Bates lives next to his family owned motel named Bates Motel with his deceased mother Norma Bates. When guests check into the hotel, he prepares dinner for them, then murders them while dressed up as Norma. Based on Norman’s symptoms I have come to the conclusion that he has Psychosis in the form of Schizophrenia, which is diagnosed when a person become disconnected with reality (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Norman displays this very well through Positive and Negative symptoms because he believes that Mother takes over his body to kill, he also talks to her and hear her talking back, he is withdrawn from society by only being in the house or the motel all day every day, his only hobby is stuffing dead animals, and he ultimately kills people. It is not clear from the film as to why Norman developed this disorder, but from how demanding Mother is, it is likely due to dysfunction in the family during Norman’s childhood leading up to adulthood, or Freud’s Psychosexual theory that says if a child does not develop correctly in the first three stages of development then it causes damage to any further development into adulthood. Based on this it is clear that Norman has Oedipus Complex, which is when a child during the Genital Stage develops an unconscious sexual desire towards their parent. Norman displays this during the film by saying that Mother gets angry when pretty girls come around, and also while Marion was about to get in the shower and he masturbated while watching her undress. For Norman Bates character depending on how you view him and your research on disorders, the only disorder you would see is DID, but Schizophrenia is the dominant disorder. He also displays depression which is a symptom of Schizophrenia. This film also demonstrates what happens if a person who is suffering from this disorder goes untreated for a long time, it can have extreme consequences for them and anyone around them or who comes in contact with them.
