Everyone in our society has rules and different guidelines they follow and cannot break. Many people like following the rules and their guidelines because they feel like if they don’t have any rules or guidelines to follow, without them they would be acting differently and breaking several rules. In my sociology class, we were all given the Norm Violation project, at first, I didn’t know what it was or what to do because I didn’t know what was a norm. A norm is like following rules something that you know everyone does and expect everyone to do it the same way; it’s like everyone eats cereal with a spoon, you shake hands with your right hand when you meet someone new, you stop when there is a red light and you go when it’s green. It was hard for me to violate a norm because I’m a shy person at times and I never break rules. It took me a while to figure out what I was going to do and where I was going to do it. I dressed like if I was going to the beach instead of going to the mall. I had shorts on and a see through shirt that you just wear over your bikini. Many people gave me weird looks and they were talking about me behind my back. My sister told me that the ladies that were walking behind us said: “why is she dressed like that doesn’t she know there is little kids around the mall.” I also saw many people looking at me weird like the guys looked at me and smile and just stared for a while and the ladies look mad and disturbed that when they saw me they were frowning. This example was a violation of a folkway because I wasn’t dressed appropriate to the mall, but it could also be a violation of a more.
