Noredink App Analysis

The app I’ve chosen to modify is noredink.com. It is a writing and grammar-based app designed to provide learners leveled practice in grades K-12. It uses “high interest content” based on student interests and names. Practice lessons are adaptive to each students’ needs, so there is no set number questions. The app also includes a diagnostic feature and quizzes with feedback. Teachers can assign specific lessons or the lessons are scaffolded in complexity.
While sentences and practice exercises are geared toward students’ interests, the site lacks effective visuals. The tutorials are stagnate and uninteresting. Students may benefit from illustrations (either interactive or moving) for greater engagement and understanding. Using the noredink app with these added features will strengthen students’ grammar and writing skills. The Cognitive Perspective (Trace Theory) indicates that using repetition and forming “maps” for the mind makes learning last. The Gestalt Learning – Factor of Similarity also shows that “similar ideas are treated and linked together and then contrasted with another set of ideas.” The repetitive nature of noredink and adding the color-coding option will support these two learning theories.

Social Constructivism or social learning is another theory that supports the teamwork and competitive features of the app. This theory states that “classroom activity should be reality-based and applicable to the real world.” Noredink already addresses this learning factor is including student interests. The addition of teams/competitions would also support this theory.
