Nora Reilly Interview Paper

I interviewed Dr. Nora Reilly who works at Radford University in the Psychology department on March 2, 2016. I had a class with Dr. Reilly last semester in industrial/organizational psychology. I interviewed Dr. Reilly in her office in Russell hall, which was a little disorganized with her packing her things for the move to the new building. She was wearing a pantsuit like she typically does and her hair is short and gray. I thought she would be an interesting person to interview because she is not the “typical” female. She was born Patricia Nora Reilly on June 2, 1958 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Her sisters called her Nora when she was young and her father preferred the name, so that is the name that stuck. Since I had a class with her, I knew that she loved growing up in New Jersey. Dr. Reilly said that Jersey City is the “best place …show more content…
She said that she “could have gotten away with murder.” Her sister Nancy did the dishes a lot and she kind of feels bad about that know because she used to do them all the time. Everyone in her house had to clean; the house work was split among everyone. Her brother would walk the dog and take out the trash, which are the more “masculine” chores. Dr. Reilly did not pick up more work until she was older which is understandable. She did more cooking as she got older and she would go to the grocery store with her brother. They would walk to the store so they could get only as much as they could carry. She would carry the lighter items while her brother carried the heavier stuff. Dr. Reilly said that her father was a feminist and that he helped his wife around the house. Her mom worked as an administrative assistant in the projects and her father was a firefighter. Since her father was a firefighter he had odd hours and sometimes they had to have dinner at 4:30pm. Her mom would not get home from work in time to make dinner those night so he made

This goes to show that although Martha had help from the other girls in the house was a financial contributor to the home, she still had to perform her duties as the woman of the house. Martha did not perceive herself as powerless and neither acted in such manner. For instance, Martha travelled frequently due to her career. Nora Harris a 64-year-old woman with Alzheimer's disease finally died Wed. Oct. 12th after a long battle of being kept alive by spoon-feeding against her wishes. Her husband said her death marks the end of an unsuccessful eight-year court battle to withdraw all food and liquid. Nora was diagnosed early on at the age of 56 with Alzheimer’s disease and drafted an advance directive that called for no measures to prolong her life, which included oral assisted feeding. However, a local judge denied his request to stop spoon feeding his wife. The issue is when a person isn’t competent and the patient who opens their mouth to accept food and fluids (as Nora did) who can no longer actively consent to remain ethically and legally unclear.…

A new exhibit in the National Museum of American History, in Washington D.C., called “Defining America: Five Critical Debates” has been created. This exhibit aims to show museum visitors what it means to be an American as well as how progress has been a reoccurring idea that developed the United States since the end of the Civil War. There are many different movements that define America; however, there are a few that show just what it meant to be an American and how the idea of progress has helped America develop into the country it is now. The Black Civil Rights Movement as well as the Women’s Suffrage Movement show how far the United States has progressed in equal treatment. Just as there is equal treatment, there is also inequality, the…

Nora Helmer is a very complicated character despite the fact that at the beginning of this play it seems like quite the opposite. At the beginning of act one, Nora is whimsical and gleeful and very much like a child. She is very much living in a fantasy world or a doll’s house as the title of the play suggests. Nora has been taught since birth to be similar to a doll. Her father treated her as such in the past and so does her husband at the time the play takes place.…

To add to this even further and highlight how much of a hard worker her mother was, the writer mentions that even at old age, her mother did push ups, made patchwork housecoats, quilts and wrote letters to her friends. The flashbacks are effective in illustrating that her mother was in fact a very hard worker, instead of the picture that society would tend to paint for women, “a simple housewife that just stays at home”. The reader understands that she was more that what society defines a housewife to…
