Nora and Torvald had complicated marriage to say the least. Torvald treated Nora as if she was a pet. Nora was Torvalds entertainment; he knew she was not educated well and consequently he took advantage of that. He was the only stable income of the house and he felt that gave him more power. Nora and Torvald each had their own set of problems. In a marriage today couples are equal. Both contribute to the household chores, income, and stability of the marriage. Couples today would also have the same rights and be equally educated.

In Nora and Torvalds marriage, women did not have the same rights as men. For example, Nora wasn’t able to get a loan own her own without Torvalds permission and signature. However, Nora had to find a loophole in order to get a loan own her own. She ended up getting a loan from Mr. Krogstad. Mr. Krogstad stated “When your husband was sick, you came to me for a loan of four thousand, eight hundred crowns” (Pg. 1265). Nora, being a compulsive liar, lied to Torvald and refused to tell him about the loan she had received from Krogstad. If Nora had had the same rights as women have today she wouldn’t have forged her father’s signature in order to get the loan. Another example was when Torvald found out about the loan he banned her from raising the children. This was acceptable because men ruled the household in that time period. Also, by the end of the play Nora left her marriage for various reasons. A woman who up and left their marriage was almost unheard of in that time period. Women were not able to have much of a voice and for the most part, they weren’t able to make their own decisions. Today, women are completely free to do anything a man can do. In Nora and Torvald’s marriage Torvald believed he could control everything. He even controlled the money and only gave some to Nora when she asked. Torvald belittled her by called her pet names for example,“ When did my squirrel get in?” (Pg.1251). Torvald also thought he could ban Nora from eating her macaroons. He saw her as his entertainment and decided that she was simply a possession of his. While in a marriage today, a woman and man are together because they love each other. In a typical healthy marriage both the partners contribute to the income and both treat each other with respect. Also, communication is important in a marriage today. A couple should feel obligated to tell each other the truth and communicate, unlike the marriage shared between Nora and
