Within the world there are many groups, a group is defined as "A collection of three to twenty people who feel a sense of belonging and common purpose." (Verderber, 170) Each group has its own construct, communication and reason for forming. In the movie 10 Things I Hate About You there are many examples of the different types of groups. One example would be an interest group, "A group composed of people who come together because they share a common interest." (Verderber, 171) In the high school the group of friends formed are created on an interest group. As Michael shows Cameron around the school he points out all the interest groups such as the jocks, the stoners, and the future ivy league students. These are all examples of interest groups because they all share a common interest such as sports, weed and school and come together because of that interest.

Nonverbal messages are impossible to avoid so naturally the movie is filled with them. Nonverbal message is “all the message we send in ways that transcend spoken or written words” (Verderber 84). One of the many nonverbal messages seen was eye contact. Eye contact is very important in communication and is used to convey emotion in the film. For example, when Kat and Patrick are on the rope swing and they end up staring into each other’s eyes the audience can see the affection that is beginning to grow between the two.
Facial expressions were also very prevalent in the film; they are very important because facial expression are used to show emotions. An example being Kat and Bianca 's face when they were arguing about going to prom. They both had a very aggressive facial expression showing they were upset.
