Nonverbal Communication In The Stranger

Decent Essays
Christopher is a very shy boy and does not like talking to people he does not know. He tries to avoid small talk with strangers and he is very uncomfortable around them. He does not understand sarcasm or non-verbal communication, which means he does not understand emotions or different facial expressions. He has to use a chart made up of different pictures of faces with a different expression on each one to help him understand the meaning of each facial expression. That chart was made for him by his mentor at school, Siobhan. He still has a struggle with the chart because the picture doesn’t always match the actual faces. He also loves to be alone. He likes to stay in his bedroom all day alone instead of hanging out with a friend or family

Some nonverbal behaviors that characterize my positive relationships include lots of touching, mutual gazes, open body language, smiling and we often mimic one another (that is modeling relational characteristics). Some nonverbal behaviors that characterize some of my negative relationships include physical distance, avoiding eye contact, closed body language and little—if any—smiling. I’m not sure why one relationship became more positive. In the first relationship, I fell in love and we purposefully worked to fulfill one another’s needs in a meaningfully way. We also built upon mutual respect.…

The settings for all three of these observations were the same; they took place at Dos Gringos. I found myself at this location, because I was invited by an old high school friend. This was my first official bar attending experience since I have turned twenty-one. The plan was after work to meet up with my friend who was going to already be there with a group of her friends. I know generally a bar is not a conventional setting to write about in a scholarly paper.…
