Nonverbal communication is a major part in life. There are many situations in which people aren’t able to have a conversation or speak, so they have to use hand gestures or facial expressions in order to get a point across. The textbook defines Nonverbal Communication as “communication other than written or spoken language that creates meaning (Beebe, Beebe, and Ivy, 2007)”. Similar to how people can often misinterpret what someone is trying to say, the same thing can happen with nonverbal communication. Different expressions, gestures, or ways to communicate without speaking are often not clear. Many people who visit different countries often have to use nonverbal communication in order to get around, and it doesn’t usually work out too well. Sadly, the inability to understand someone else’s nonverbal communication almost cost me both my life, and everything I had in my bank account. Even though my hand movement meant one thing to me, it meant something completely different to the other driver. Driving is one of the many situations in life where people depend on hand gestures because it’s almost impossible to speak without having to roll your window down and stop. Most car accidents are because of miscommunication, which is why it’s essential to learn the national hand signals before getting out their on the road. Even though this was a tough experience, it did teach me a lot about how communication between humans can sometimes work perfectly, and at others not work at all.
