One of the main reasons for the grapevine is the speed at which it operates and the possible lack of formal communication throughout an organization. Leaders should be quick to openly communicate potential bad news and all decisions that are being made which might negatively impact employees in addition to reducing the fear of the unknown (Fischer, 2012, slide 7). The grapevine could spread a great deal of misinformation, which in turn could cause the controversy over potential upgrading that was discussed, consequently affecting work performance. As individuals are required to inform larger amounts of people, e-mail becomes an advantageous tool, hence, 71 percent of cases, electronic communication has become the primary medium of communication in today’s organizations (Robbins, 2009, p. 360). Regardless of the medium, the content needs to be the focus. “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person” (Colossians 4:6, ESV), this holds true whether your speech is done face-to-face or written in an e-mail. There is no doubt regarding the countless potential benefits of communicating through electronic mediums. The military has become heavily reliant on utilizing e-mail as their primary means of communication. Some have even attempted to lead through email, which causes several problems. One such issue is the guiding principle that the faster the medium the greater the potential for ambiguity, both with regards to information quality and emotional meaning (Fischer, 2012, slide 8).
