Nonprofit organizations face various dilemmas in providing for the community, such as finances and safety, but how do these organizations sufficiently reduce such heavily impactful issues? Through community, nonprofit organizations are supported through volunteers and financial donations. These nonverbal strategies can be effective, for if the homeless do not feel threatened by a volunteer’s posture, then they will be less likely to defend themselves with aggressive actions. Also, homeless individuals are typically in the habit of protecting the possessions they have when fending for themselves on the streets. For this reason, when people invade the personal space of the homeless, they feel threatened as though they need to protect what belongs to them by reacting aggressively. Volunteers from Breakfast on Beech Street have witnessed the effects of how an invasion of the guest’s space can cause discord. These nonverbal strategies would be useful for this nonprofit organization to employ in their daily routine with guests. To bring the guests peace of mind in regards to the safety of their possessions, volunteers as well as other guests should maintain an adequate amount of space between one another.
