Several people across Canada rely on non-profit originations like the food bank in order to survive. Lots of these people have jobs, but they do not make enough money to pay for all of the basic necessities in life. After paying for rent, many people do not have enough money to purchase groceries and rely on organizations to provide them with food. This is why volunteers are vital because they help operate various organizations without being paid for their services. After volunteering at the Guelph Food Bank and the Lakeside Hope House, it really solidified the fact that without volunteers it would negatively affect the less fortunate. After sorting the food at the food bank, I realized that even the simplest of jobs goes a long way in helping members in my community. Sorting the food may not be a difficult task, but if no one was to do it, the food bank would become unorganized and would start become inefficient. If the inefficiently caused the food bank to stop its operations, several people in my community would be affected as they would have no place to get food to feed their families. Thus, every volunteer, regardless of the job, plays an important part as they keep non-profit organizations running efficiently. Developers are always looking to have the highest return on their investment and this has negatively impacted the rental market. There is very low rental stock being created and many are being demolished in place for condominiums. The reason for this is that buildings meant specifically for rental units just do not yield the best return for investors. The has caused the rental market prices to increase as the demand has outweighed the supply. This has negatively impacted people who are in the lower income bracket because many are paying more than thirty percent of their income on housing. As a result, many people cannot afford to pay rent and have to rely on the non-market housing. Social housing is a popular option as tenants pay only thirty percent of their income on housing. This is called rent-geared-to-income, and helps tenants by limiting the amount they spend on rent each month. By spending only thirty percent of one’s income on rent each month, people are able to afford the essentials like food and clothing. Another non-market housing option is transitional housing which is a temporary option to get people out of homelessness. It provides services such as life skills and job training which is beneficial in getting people out of homelessness. Without affordable housing, there would be an increase in homelessness which would damage the lives of many
