There are various reasons as to why I’m deserving of the Etna-Dixmont School Scholarship. The most prevalent reason is my family history and connection with the town of Dixmont. My father and my grandparents moved to from Massachusetts to Dixmont, Maine when he was in second grade. My grandfather bought a house on Route 9 in Dixmont, and some other land in addition to that. The Dixmont Corner Church was built in 1835, and had an active one room school house next to it that was built in 1808.…
Robert Nozick is a famous American philosopher widely known for his Anarchy, State and Utopia book. His works were designated to the existence of minimal state and libertarianism. However, in this essay I will talk about his view over hedonism. According to hedonism, pleasure is the highest good and only pleasure could increase the well-being of society. So, in Anarchy, State and Utopia, Nozick makes thought experiment in order to defeat hedonism and prove that there is something more significant than pleasure.…
In his article “The Experience Machine”, Nozick (1974) offers a thought-experiment which people can get any experience which they desire in a experience machine. In this paper, I argue that people should not plug into the experience machine. If I have a choice to plug into the experience machine, depending on my quality of life, I may or may not enter it. In Nozick’s description (1974), the experience machine can give people any experience that they desire.…
From the moment we are born we begin to learn important lessons teach us. These lessons are essential in helping to shape our character, and ultimately lead to who we become. Everybody has had that moment when someone, or even possible something, has taught you a valuable lesson that you will never forget. I know that I’ve had a multitude of them, but most of them I can’t remember the specific situation that transpired to teach me the lesson. For example, I can’t remember the first time that I touched a hot stove and realized that I probably shouldn’t do that.…
P1. If pleasure is what we value most and we will experience more pleasure by doing x rather than doing y, then we should do x over y P2. We will experience more pleasure by plugging into the Experience Machine than not plugging into the Experience Machine C1: If all that matters to us is maximising pleasure then we should want to plug into the experience machine. (P1&P2) P3.…
Whenever I think about how my life immediately changed, I think about my change from a high needs school to one of the best high schools in Virginia. I grew up in the DC metro area and spent most of my life bouncing between schools that were worse than the last. When I was in 9th grade, I moved. I was lucky to move to a much better school district because my aunt owned a home there. I think about how circumstance changed my life a lot.…
The Events That Shape Who We Are Individuals are exposed to experiences in life on a daily basis. Every experience affects a person in some way. Some past experiences are filled with darkness: sexual abuse, emotional abuse, bullying, accidents, fear, and more negative events. While, some past experiences are filled with light: great families, a cheerful childhood, adventures, romance, and more positive occurrences.…
Learning is a teamwork effort dispersed between teachers, students, faculty, and parents. Furthermore, parents are essential for helping a child with cooperation and continuous motivation. There are many benefits listed in the textbook that involve parent involvement such as: Positive behavior, long-term achievement, conscientious homework completion, increase in attendance, and graduation rates. Additionally, with the interaction between parents and students, it is a lot easier for the teacher to deal with disruptive behavior by gaining an insight to their home life which might indicate why they are acting a certain way (Introduction to Teaching, 336). In addition to the essential parent help, there are two helpful levels that a teacher can…
Chapter One Reflection In my opinion, Experience Psychology by Laura A. King is an excellent resource for students and teachers who are studying this intriguing science. Each chapter is filled with useful information to help me better understand the people around me. The first chapter in particular gives me a solid foundation of knowledge that I can use while diving deeper into the subject. Chapter one discusses the history, the seven contemporary approaches, and the use of the scientific method which altogether give me a decent chunk of information that I can use to build on in this course.…
Strong relationships are built when there is open communication, equal partnership and understanding. Parents know their child the best and the open communication will help the child succeed. Communication with families can help identify behavior and academic changes. When a teacher knows about things that occur in a child’s life outside the classroom they will have a better idea on how to help the child. Family involvement is also important and helps build the parent teacher relationship.…
In the American education system, students are judged from an early age whether or not they will ever reach the standards previously placed before them. The expectations for adolescence are ever growing, and after falling behind it is easy for a student to become lost in the world known as “remedial.” Once deemed as such, it becomes nearly impossible to shed said label and become, at best, average. Breaking free from previously set inadequacies and challenging the unknown world of education are goals in which anyone can accomplish. In Mike Rose’s book Lives on the Boundary, he talks about his early years being placed in a vocational course at the secondary school he attended.…

The Ultimate Experience: Life in Color I. Introduction In what may seem a harsh generalization, I would like to begin by considering the likelihood of a Christian committing suicide to gain an early entry into heaven? On first inclination, we know this would not happen because they perceive suicide to be a sin. Even with a less nuanced version, we know that in spite of the belief of heaven and a perfect afterlife, there has not been a wide scale mass extinction of Christians any time lately. If I were to formally ask someone this question, they would probably think that I was joking, because of how absurd it sounds.…
This places MY students in the epicenter of every decision made and every activity strategically planned in my classroom. Each day I strive to model these characteristics by putting in the hours necessary for every student to be successful, being approachable and available for students, parents, coworkers, and administrators, placing importance on being a life-long learner, modeling risk taking in the classroom, setting high expectations for all learners, respecting my students, and effectively managing my classroom. Ruby K. Payne, PhD, in her book, A Framework for Understanding Poverty states, “A successful relationship occurs when emotional deposits are made to the student, emotional withdrawals are avoided, and students are respected. To honor students as human beings worthy of respect and care is to establish a relationship that will provide for enhanced learning.” After reading the book, I purposefully found two ways to make these emotional deposits with all my students, especially my low social economic students: purchasing school supplies for them at the beginning of the year and allowing them to earn money to spend at the book fair.…
