In recent years, there has been a surge of noninvasive rejuvenation progresses aimed at the treatment of fine wrinkles and tightening of skin, using a variety of external laser and light sources. A series of three to five IPL treatments termed “Photo Rejuvenation” has recently been commercialized and is accessible in many dermatology labs nationwide. The principle behind tightening of the skin is based on the theory that heating collagen fibers with high intensity light energy leading to their contracture. Moreover, the thermal stimulation of fibroblasts by the higher wavelengths within the IPL spectrum has been shown to result in increased production of extracellular matrix proteins, leading to replacement of the lost dermal volume (plumpness of the skin). The skin layer cools but the chromophores do not lose significant heat, so the targeted region is at a much higher temperature than the skin layer. This removes the need for additional skin cooling, and offers significantly greater comfort levels while greatly reducing the possibility of adverse side effects, even in heavily pigmented skin. There are currently more than 900 Energist VPL™ machines worldwide, including several low impact hand held devices that can be purchased to do treatments at the comfort of homes. Home machines, however, are not as recommended or effective yet. Low doses of impact are not as effective of targeting the molecules.
