In this article written by Jen Christensen, Alison Kerr Courtney, the founder of BiblioRemedy is not a therapist nor an English teacher. “Courtney is a kind of book whisperer.” Courtney’s clients do not walk out of her office with a prescription of some kind of medicine, instead they walk out with a reading list of books that she thinks will help her clients find solace. Courtney talks about how people who have been reading fiction test higher for empathy, how people’s heart rate change when they read intense and interesting books, and how fiction may actually be more powerful than nonfiction. All these things are useful facts that help Courtney’s clients get over their grief and sorrow of something terrible that happened in their life. But

Reading literature does not equal comprehension or understanding. Readers must first understand how their life shapes their perspective and then they must let other perceptions dominate their thoughts in order to understand the writer’s perspective. Barbara Tuchman explains that books are the foundation of life’s disciplines because “books are humanity in print”. We read books to understand other people’s culture, struggle, and perspective, but only if we desire to understand. Perspective shapes how we view…

Every single person is different, and different things work for different people. In Changing the Subject, Birkerts admits that he reads “novels in order to indulge in a concentrated and directed sort of inner activity that is not available in most of my daily transactions. This reading, more than anything else I do, parallels and thereby tunes up, accentuates my own inner life, which is ever associative, a shuttling between observation, memory, reflection, emotional recognition” (148). It’s great that Birkerts has his own way of tapping into his inner concentration; however, he can’t force this on all of society. He believes that if he must read a novel to achieve this, then so must everyone else.…

Even by reading just a few pieces of literature, it is possible to gain an understanding of how literature can influence the way we appreciate and embrace our own identities. Not only does reading literature help many readers realize how privileged they are in comparison to the characters in the novel, but it also helps individuals appreciate their identities through the process of empathizing. For me, reading variations of literature helped me develop a connection to the characters while simultaneously comparing their own situations to that of the written piece. Reading my book club novel allowed me to empathize, and show concern for the well-being of others. Literature helps me learn from the mistakes of others, and it gives me the ability to appreciate my strengths and weaknesses.…

As Ralph Waldo Emerson has once said, “Fiction reveals the truth that reality Obscures.” Fiction can make us see the bigger picture in situations that are problematic and improve our skill to analyze difficult circumstances. The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge, shows how money can’t solve all your problems and how there can be many more problems then what their eyes perceive at the surface. Despite the school board’s recent sentiments regarding the lack of value that fiction provides, fiction should remain in the school’s curriculum due to its ability to educate young people in diverse ways instead of a single approach. Fiction can help us ruminate in many manners, and fiction can also teach us different morals that we might have not known…

A Dubious Dinner Throughout time, many readers have read countless works of literature unaware of the label the work has; this label can either be commercial or literary fiction. If a reader desires a short-term, simple escape to reality, commercial fiction would be the most optimal selection. Although if they are desiring a more “complex, lasting aesthetic and intellectual pleasure,” then literary fiction would fit the description (Arp and Johnson 62). Commercial fiction is a quick and easy read, and the reader is only focused on “what happens next” (Arp and Johnson 65).…

Reading was something I was practically raised on as a child. My dad made sure that my younger sister and I were read to every single night before he tucked us in, passing down a tradition that he believed had aided in shaping his own childhood. I distinctly remember my simple mind roaming along in the lands of Narnia and Middle Earth as such books instilled in me a restless sense of adventure and a longing to learn. This longing drove me to read more and more on my own, all the while my father continued to read to me at a higher and more complex level, that at the time seemed unattainable. Yet books to me were journies completely separate from my own world and I could never seem to envision them as anything more than a source of entertainment.…

Some stories not only make me feel euphoric with happy endings, but they also make me feel despondent when a character’s deep sorrow touched my heart.…

It’s exciting plot and meaningful themes led me to see reading in a whole new light. I realized that fiction is not only useful for entertainment, but also for learning about the world. With this revolutionary state of mind, I sought out books such as Lord of the Flies and 1984. Just last year, I read Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, which once again proved to me that novels are nearly as useful for learning about the world and developing one’s character as nonfiction books. With this new perspective in mind, I am excited to discover more books to once again captivate me and consume my…
