What is a Sergeant and what is a Staff Sergeant? These two are both Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) a leader of Soldiers. They are both responsible for accomplishing the mission and the welfare of their Soldiers. They are competent and proficient in everything they do, technically and tactically. They must be fair and impartial when recommending both rewards and punishment.

But of all the Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) rank, the sergeant has the greatest impact on the lower ranking soldiers. Generally, sergeants are the first line leaders where the privates look for advice and example(s). The sergeant must be unquestionably competent in order to carry out the mission correctly, accomplish each task and care for assigned soldiers. I believe that before you become a sergeant, you must already have the abilities and qualities of a sergeant. Just as you are a sergeant, you must practice or conduct yourself as if you are a staff sergeant. So on and so forth.

Training the Soldiers is our main focus. Working with them side by side, giving them and showing them the standards that need to be met. Knowing your Soldiers weaknesses and strengths are part of mentorship. How well you train your Soldier(s) determines the shape of how well they become as leaders.

The rank of staff sergeant closely parallels that of the sergeant in duties and responsibilities. In fact, the basic duties and responsibilities of all the NCO ranks never change, but there are significant differences between its steps of the NCO structure. The staff sergeant is a more experience leader of Soldiers. It is expected that the staff sergeant can bring the benefits of that experience to bear in any situation and under all
