Non-violence works as a strategy to bring about change because it is morally and strategically superior to any other strategy, and because it works for changes that will benefit all people. Non-violence, as a morally and strategically superior method to bring about change is first seen in Document 1. Document 1 is a letter from Mohandas Gandhi to the English governor in India where Gandhi explains why he plans to use non-violence and how doing so will make British recognize the “wrong they have done to India,” (Doc 1/ Letter to Irwin). Also in the document, Gandhi points out that the physical harming of a peaceful entity violates the morals of nearly every civilization around the Globe. This means that by using non-violence, Gandhi’s movement is morally superior to his opposition, which put the morals and reputation of the opposition into play, coaxing the other side to comply with Gandhi’s requests.…
Todd May wrote the article “Is American Nonviolence Possible?” to address the growing epidemic of violent crimes and actions across the United States. Mays opens the article with specific examples of very violent events to set the situation to which he is responding so that the reader feels the need for what Mays is explaining in this article. Mays introduces the issue with a rhetorical question, and poses many of these throughout the article so that the audience asks the questions to themselves as they read his stance on how America needs to evaluate how much violence occurs in our nation. The author effectively appeals to the logical feelings of the American people, as well as invokes their emotions into feeling that a change needs to come…
The main theme that I saw in A Separate Peace was finding your identity. Throughout the novel, two characters, Gene and Finny, showed several examples of the theme because both of them had trouble figuring out who they were apart from each other. Since Finny had such an outgoing, chivalrous personality, Gene felt encumbered by him, unable to be his own person, only Finny's best friend. He even started to think of himself as an extension of Finny. So when Finny was injured, it profoundly effected both of them.…
Please Fear Violence Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most motivating speakers of his time. Looking back at Dr. King’s life, it can be summarized that Dr. King’s life was an example of the power that is brought from nonviolence. Writing on this notion is Cesar Chavez, a labor organizer and civil rights leader. Chavez wrote an article in a magazine of a religious organization with the intent to help those in need. In this article, Chavez using his words to promote fear of violence to try and get the reader to support nonviolent ways.…
“Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man’s original virtue. It is through disobedience that progress has been made- disobedience and rebellion.” These words spoken from Oscar Wilde explain what has happened over decades. Time and time again, people have gone against the law to do what was right. Not only did it make a small difference, it changed what the future would be like for everyone.…
A Separate Peace: Classifying Conflicts “I need you to be happy. I need one of us to be happy.” (Holly Black’s Red Glove) This quote has a lot to do with conflict. The conflict of life and keeping everyone happy, even if you can’t be.…
Non-violence is a peaceful way to evoke social and political change. Three cases where non-violence worked were in the countries of India, the United States, and South Africa where people felt they were being treated unjust. Gandhi, King, and Mandela all used non-violence, what made it work? Nonviolence is the practice of refraining from the use of violence when protesting against oppression. The use of non-violence by Gandhi, King, and Mandela worked because they were strong leaders who were able to unify people and used effective methods when protesting.…
One argument from Maslow’s essay “The Need to Know and the Fear of Knowing” which directly relates to A Separate Peace is that one often evades knowledge of their true selves. Although Phineas’s nonchalant and loyal characteristics make him seem almost godlike, he seems to also fear certain aspects of himself. In particular, he has a fear that his basic desires contradict the innocent person everyone perceives him to be. For many of the students at the Devon school, the war seems almost fictional, partially because of the attitudes of people such as Finny. Finny’s ignorance of the rules, yet simultaneous loyalty and sincerity, made him seem innocent despite the trouble he got himself into.…

Zero tolerance policy requires school officials to hand down specific, consistent, and harsh punishment, usually suspension or expulsion when students break certain rules (Lawyers.com, 2018). If a student break the rules, teachers are not going to tolerate it. They are going to throw the student out of the class for misconduct. This is an example of structural violence because power is all within school administrators such as: Teachers, Principal, Dean, and Security Guards. These school administrators can decide what is legal and illegal.…
Positive social change results in the improvement of human and social conditions” (Walden University, 2015b, para.4). Several of my values include family, success, helping others, knowing myself and my spiritual life, which are very important. Social change will be incorporated by acting on the knowledge obtained each quarter from Walden…
The advertisement chosen is part of Ecovia: Stop the Violence campaign to promote safe driving with creative imagery and slogans such as “don’t speed”, “don’t drink and drive”, “overtake with care”, and “don’t text and drive”. Their advertisement depicts an individual being uppercut by a lone fist, and vehicles are painted on the punching fist and the victim’s face. It is implied that the vehicles are colliding with each other. The Ecovia “don’t speed” ad features a women being punched by an arm―presumably belonging to a man.…
This can be termed as the need to eradicate violence was ignited by the realization by the Women’s Country members that their present state was precipitated by the violent past of their culture, as such for the sake of self-preservation and the preservation of future generations. This is further initiated through selective bleeding. This can be realized as a civic engagement as it instills notions in the participants that selective breeding could raise a desired society at their will. It is so as it also targets a group of people namely the women. This can also be evidenced by the way the women ensure that they controlled sexual contact with the male fraternity.…
Section 1: The identity of a social world is a social group and view of the subject matter. The importance of violence in a society is to identify problems in where this problem comes from. Specifically, looking at a group of children where their habits involve a long amount of time on the television where they are influenced by violence. I think that views on violence in this kind of society are almost ignored. Violent behavior can influence and even corrupt those in society.…
