Common tendencies in perception include making snap judgments, cling to first impressions, assume others are like us, and to be influenced by our expectations.(pg123, Interplay) A way to solve this is through a method of perception checking. Perception checking is when a listener describe a behavior, give two or more possible interpretations of the behavior, and ask for clarification. (pg129, Interplay) In the scene where Empathy is different from sympathy, empathy to see a situation from someone else perspective and sympathy is to feel pity for others downfalls.(pg131, Interplay) Sympathy was when Rachael cried over news of Ben's and Katie's break up. Empathy was shown and demonstrated in Katie's final monologue by Ben when he sincerely took what she said into consideration, agreed, understood what she was saying and felt how she felt. That is why he did not object to going to Chow Fun's and gave her a hug.
