Non-Traditional Student Analysis

Sorry for putting 01F and 02F, I have not found documentation for which class I am in.

As a non-traditional student (I am 62), attending GSU part time, I have settled into a schedule that has been working out great. I am not at GSU to use it as a stepping stone for a new career, I am here only for the education. This is my tenth semester, of which the last six semesters I have done at least one online class. Over this time, I have seen several variations of online classes, for a subject matter that I really enjoy I find this class system to be the most difficult. I find it will be very easy to make a mistake in saving an answer (I think I did this on the intro practice quiz, I did not realize that I did not answer a question until it was too

The group I am currently considering is StuMo, which stands for Student Mobilization. Some of the reasons why I am interested in StuMo are that I am looking to grow spiritually, meet new people, develop leadership skills, and strengthen my character, while also having something to occupy my time here at the University. It is an interdenominational student group, whose mission statement is to raise up laborers for Christ from college campuses and mold these laborers to future leaders. StuMo is open to people of all religious affiliations and ethnic backgrounds. One of their goals is support and help students in any way along their spiritual development.…

Throughout the year AVID has helped me learn organizational skills enormously. I say this because at the beginning of the year I didn’t know how I was going to complete all the work I received and I didn’t really understand the time management part. So as we started getting more and more homework, I found it was important to use your planner and to do your homework the night it was assigned. Several times I fell into a whole on Thursday nights, when we had binder the next day.…

As the season of fall approaches here at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, I have reached the middle of my fall semester as a freshmen college student. Midterms are approaching and I am pulling my hair out due to the sleepless nights and long hours of studying for midterms. There are some students are planning activities for Halloween while I on the other hand am preparing my study guide for my Microeconomic midterm. The closest to a break I would have from school would be Thanksgiving break, and during the break I would return home and begin working for my family. All the stress I am feeling about school could be due to my unorganized school schedule and responsibility of renting an apartment.…

This is a non-traditional high school and based on the population and my experience during the fall semester I still think that there is a lot to do here for this particular population (about their age, legal and social status). Everybody seemed very committed to work hard to support these students. It is true that regarding working with them in regular sessions is a challenge for the counselor. I feel it is difficult to work directly with students as probably I could have worked in a traditional school. I am really interested in working with this population and I also feel that if someone wants to learn and understand the immigrant population in other schools in this area and other areas this is a great place to learn.…

While I read the twenty principles from UncommonSense Framework, I realized all of those principles applied to me sometime during my high school career; however, there were a couple that stood out the most to me. I have spent much time teaching and mentoring students in out junior high school and illustrating my leadership abilities. I have accomplished many activities that had to be executed thoroughly with myriad responsibilities. Past these three distinguished principles, I have had to demonstrate integrity, honesty, courage, and unity every day in my high school career, whether it be inside or outside of school. Teaching and mentoring students is a big part of my life as a high schooler.…

I had the pleasure of teaching Sara in her 11th grade honors English class at Mark Twain High School. From the first day of class, Sara impressed me with her ability to be articulate about difficult concepts and texts, her sensitivity to the nuances within literature, and her passion for reading, writing, and creative expression- both in and out of the classroom. Sara is a talented literary critic and poet, and she has my highest recommendation as a student and writer. Sara is talented at considering the subleties within literature and the purpose behind authors' works. She produced an extraordinary year-long thesis paper on creative identity development, in which she compared works from three different time periods and synthesized cultural and historical perspectives to inform her analysis.…

Ever since the creation of the two North American countries, the United States of America (USA) and Canada, it has been observed through the waves of immigration and refugee’s that lower income and poverty stricken areas encounter more difficulties than higher income areas. The low income and poverty stricken communities have higher rates of crime, the population is denser, and it is usually more racially and ethnically diverse. These conditions negatively affect the growth and educational outcomes of the children within these communities. “When collecting data about children and youth, Statistics Canada (2008) considers family income, parents’ occupation, and parents’ education to arrive at an overall indicator of SES” (Woolfolk, Winne, &…

In Gills main points he writes about how people are not learning effectively during their schooling. I agree with what the author is writing about, that the education system has been cultured in ways that may not be particularly realistic. People in school often worry more about the grade than actually retaining the information given to them. I think this is more of a problem now, seeing as assignment and test are put online to complete and the answers are easily accessed through the textbook or the web. People have adapted to relying on technology so much which leads to loss of creativity.…

Models of student affairs help educators to “reflect on the characteristics of student affairs practice and the extent of the emphasis on student engagement and success” (Manning, Kinzie, and Schuh, 2017, p. 271). In order to enrich students’ educational experience and holistic development, I believe different student affairs models can be implemented at different levels while holding true to a university’s institutional mission. For over a year, I have worked with MBA students at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in the Evening and Weekend Programs Office. Booth’s mission centers around empowering students to “dig deeper, discover more, and shape the future” through personal, inquisitive thinking and open inquiry (Chicago…

This section was all about adding rigorous material into the classroom. They define rigor as challenging material but also it is material that helps the students struggle. I think the best way to use this in a classroom is to not use it every day. I agree with the having kids struggle is one of the ways to help them grow and challenge their thinking skills. If you have students that have not fully developed their critical thinking skills, they will struggle.…
