In few cases, AAA can be diagnosed from a physical examination where the doctor feels a small mass in the abdomen. An ultrasound is the most commonly used test to diagnose an aneurysm. Doctors use methods such as a CT scan, MRI, or arteriogram to determine the size of the aneurysm (MedScape, n.d). The chance of survival for patients is extremely low after rupture of the aorta has occurred. These deaths are avoidable if the aneurysm is detected and treated before rupture happens. Treatment for AAA can be surgical or non-surgical. Method of treatment is dependent upon the patient’s overall health, age, and extent of the disease.
