Non Subject-Specific Scholarships

If you were on the board of a scholarship selection committee 20 years from now, would you award the 17-year-old you a scholarship? Why or why not?
With non-subject-specific scholarships such as this, one of the most significant components of an application is the student’s exhibition of motivation and enthusiasm for their intended field of study. If I were to be in charge of awarding scholarships to applying students, I firmly believe that I would acknowledge the potential and the drive for success within seventeen-year-old me, especially considering my interest in engineering. Things will likely (hopefully) be different twenty years from now, but there are currently far too few women in STEM fields, and it would be a noble cause indeed to

Influential Time Over a million people in this world would say that they are influential in some way. One question that lingers the air is, how does Time Magazine choose 100 people that are the most influential in that year? A lot of people can be influential to many different people by starting a charity, giving back to the community, or how they promote themselves in public. Most of the time, I identify myself as an average teenage girl. A girl that is not the best at driving and likes to eat a lot of Chick-Fil-A. But then I remind myself that I am not average; I am anything but average. I have already overcome major obstacles in my life that other students my age probably have never even thought about. Being a child of a recovering alcoholic and a victim of foreclosure, I have a different outlook on the world.…

In twenty years, as a board member of a scholarship selection committee, I would award the 17-year-old me a scholarship not because I am simply answering the prompt in my favor, but because I know that the 17-year-old me's dream is to go to college to gain a higher education and has made learning a high priority since elementary school. The 17-year-old me is determined, hard-working, and understands the struggle of having little money, so I would know that the scholarship would not go to waste; she would use it so that her parents can ease their worry about how she is going to go to college, since they are not able to make any contributions. Knowing that her family earns little income, she has spent most of her high school years dedicating her time to her schoolwork, hoping that she would be qualified to earn scholarships during her senior year. During the other majority of her time, she has volunteered for over 300 hours at various locations and participating in school clubs and activities.…

The Katherine Trewhitt Scholarship would impact my life by showing me my potential and helping me avoid debt. I see a massive part of transitioning from a child to an adult is learning to be independent. From my point of view, independence is found through hard work and responsibility. This gateway into adulthood is found when a student begins applying for colleges and scholarships. Applying for scholarships takes a considerable amount of time and effort, thus making it a challenge to see if through the years a student has learned to work hard and be responsible.…

The values and standards of National Honor Society are the four important pillars of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. A person needs to represent all four pillars to uphold the honor of National Honor Society, just like a table with four legs must balance a table. I have developed through the years to be a strong leader, holding the table of scholarship, leadership, service, and character and I would be so very honored to hold this leadership with National Honor Society. Scholarship is holding myself to a high standard, academically and socially. I display a strong sense of scholarship as I have maintained the Highest Honor Roll each grade of my High School career, Middle School and even Elementary School, I love to learn!…

From my perspective, character is defined as who you are and the way you portray yourself to others. I believe that I am someone who is full of integrity, respectful, and capable in overcoming any obstacle. Most importantly, the beliefs and values that I hold dearly is what makes me the person who I am today. I have learned that it is essential to treat others the way you want to be treated, regardless of who they are; because of this value, it has allowed me to hold relationships with my family, teachers, and peers. Moreover, I strive to become a better person every day and hope to develop more meaningful values through NHS.…

I am willing to bet that there are many astonishing young men and women who have applied for this scholarship. I am also willing to bet there are a fair amount of applicants who meet the unwritten standards needed to receive this scholarship. I will not boast promises of outstanding grades or how this money could build my future. Instead, I will tell of my past, allowing my personality speak for itself. I intend to examine the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields and I hope to discover why women are less likely to enter such a field. I want to examine this as a female who enjoys science and math, and because I want to research the underlying factors contributing to the lack of women in these fields. I also hope to learn about whether or not the issue is improving, and possible ways that it can be improved in our society. Additionally, I feel it would be interesting to explore the idea of whether equality between men and women can truly be achieved in society based on research and what Le Guin argues in the novel. I think this is a reasonable topic to cover because there are frequent conversations in The Dispossessed about women in Shevek’s…

Therefore, groups like WISE, Women in Science and Engineering, WIN, Women in Nuclear, and other STEM chapters, which promote women in STEM are important because women in college can see successful women in their field. They can be paired with mentors, which are normally women in the workforce, and this will help inspire these girls to want to continue their education (WIN). These women should realize that they are the future of engineering and are helping inspire many young…
