The United States has been dependent on non-renewable fuel sources for many years. Ever since the advent of the coal powered steam engines and the internal combustion engine, fuels such as coal and oil have governed the lives and economy of the majority of Americans. These non-renewable fuels release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which add to greenhouse gases. These greenhouse gases lead to climate change and many other detrimental effects. According to the IPCC “Most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely* due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations” (Solomon) and the IPCC considers very likely to mean more than 90% occurrence (Solomon). With the falling price of solar panels, it is becoming more lucrative for large companies to use solar energy to lower their operating costs. The commercial solar sector has seen large growth in the last few years with large companies such as Walmart, Costco, Kohl’s, and Ikea implementing systems on their large buildings across the country (Solar Means Business). Renewable energy including solar has recently received a boost in private and public investments since the Paris COP21. Much of this is coming from the Breakthrough Energy Coalition which was put together by billionaire Bill Gates. The goal of this Coalition of private investors is to bring down the price of renewable energy through innovation, so that it will be economically competitive with fossil fuels (Gates).
