Non Psychiatric Nurses

The article that I choose was about comparing stigma against mentally ill patients by psychiatric and non-psychiatric nurses at a large hospital in Iran. I found the article very interesting and eye opening since I was surprise to find out that psychiatric nurses had stigma against mentally ill patients. One would think that psychiatric nurses would have in depth understanding of mental illnesses and how these illnesses affect patients physiologically and psychosocially. Psychiatric nurses have extensive knowledge of the disease processes compare to non-psychiatric nurses and because of that they should have compassion and empathy more than non-psychiatric nurses.

For instance, in “Kitchen Controversial” Traister argues the idea that girls shouldn’t be the only ones to take Home Economics.…

I choose the article “Hidden Epidemic: Tapeworms Living Inside People’s Brains” by Carl Zimmer. I picked this particular article because I thought it was interesting to learn about the effects tapeworms can have on a person’s brain and the things tapeworms can cause that people do not usually hear about. This relates to the class because we talked about tapeworms and their effects on humans. We also talked about how people get them and how long they can stay in the body.…

Trent Patrick Dr. Moloney SOC 350 October 9, 2015 Concept Application 2 Involuntary Psychiatric Treatment For my Concept Application I chose an article from TIME HEALTH CARE that discusses a study released in February of 2015. This study is relevant to our topic discussion on involuntary psychiatric treatment and how several states are benefitting from forcing people into out patient care. I found that this article very interesting since it covers the topics we just got finished with in class. For example, the assignment we did on the involuntary psychiatric treatment of Ms. Brady, who was making some very flawed decisions that essentially forced the class to be divided amongst the arguments for in patient care, out patient care, or her working…

Hi Brian. Haven personally witnessed (to some degree) individual, organizational, and system level change within a different sector, this article was spot on in my opinion. Its' analysis of models and tools that can move the needle forward was the first point of appreciation. Also, I appreciated their call out of 'racism' as a fundamental problem to tackle if wanting to solve for any injustice or inequality. In my experience particularly working on Social Determinants of Health, racism is often the overlooked or at least unmentioned root problem.…

I chose to research about technology for my Outside Reading project for multiple reasons. One reason is that technology is the topic that most interests me since there are many possibilities with it and it’s never known what can happen to it. Another reason is because technology is a lot more modern today than they were back then because people rely on them more than they used to. Finally, technology is fun to play with and it’s also very fun to see what is going on about it and what breakthroughs have happened recently. The “Researchers enable patient to use brain to move fingers on prosthetic arm” article was the one I liked the most for several reasons.…
