Non-profit organizations attempt to combat massive social issues. Major issues, require major funding. Lack of funding can create issues, as can, funding primarily received from private donors. Dr. Goriudappa Venkataswamy, founder of the Aravind hospital, which has global domination in provider of cataract surgery, is self-sufficient. Self- sufficiently allows a company to carry out its mission, without distractions that can develop as a result of accepting donations, or focusing on fund raising and attempting to obtain grants. The ultimate mission of Aravind “Is to wipe out needless blindness” (Starling, 2011, p.336). Dr. V, in partnership with David Green utilize “Aurolab’s low-cost, high-volume business model to eye surgery services.” The result is the ability to have a high percentage (approximately 70 percent,) of surgery’s performed for free, and the remainder performed above cost. With roughly 90% of the budget being self-produced, the founders and employees can maintain focus on the mission, rather than, being distracted by satisfying donor expectations, or spend time finding grants, that may have restrictions on fund usage.
