County: Life, Death and Politics at Chicago’s Public Hospital by a Chicago based physician and health activist David A. Ansell is a very inspirational book because it covers 30 years of Cook County Hospital’s history, beginning in the late 1970s till 2002. Cook County Hospital is an urban public hospital in Chicago that admits patients who are uninsured. Time, space, communication, and identity are portrayed throughout the book. These four factors are important in inter-ethnic relationships between patients and health care providers. Being able to identify these factors in a clinical setting, health care providers can provide more efficient care for all patients.…

In the case of The ER that Became the Emergency, we are introduced to Ralph, a CEO at Community Memorial Hospital (CMH), and his financial officer, Bill. Here are the key findings from the information we were provided: • CMH is a private not-for-profit hospital • City Hospital is responsible for providing care to indigent people and receives money from the government to do so • Patient traffic has dramatically increased in the last 2.5 months for CMH • Most new patients are indigent people who have been diverted from City Hospital • CMH will lose anywhere between $700,000-$800,000 this month by providing care to those patients • If things don’t change, CMH will have to shut their doors in 6 months • Ralph has yet to find any outside help…
Last year, the NCAA generated revenue was over $900 million dollars. A large part of this sum comes from media rights, sponsorships, merchandise sales, and ticket sales. As a result, the NCAA, ironically categorized as “non-profit”, possess a large value of leftover cash. Approximately 96% of the profit is returned directly to both the school and its respected conferences. Therefore, schools can generate a gigantic amount of revenue from its sports departments.…

They all began out of the need to do “something” with the poor, insane and homeless. As medical needs were specialized and new directions evolved to care for the needs of each specific group; the government got involved with the financing of these services. These became profitable business ventures and health care providers and companies were setting up shop left and right. That is how the three entities; hospitals, long-term care and mental health got separated into different…

Community hospitals are normally located in small towns, so they can be said to cater for local needs (Punke, 2015). In essence they are able to listen to and consider the financial difficulties of a patient. State hospitals normally serve a metropolitan and large population, therefore making it problematic to sufficiently accommodate the needs of all the patients who are disadvantaged financially. Will the poor be unable to get there because they do not have cars and there is no public transportation? Transport could be a problem but in a serious case, the hospital could use its ambulances to transport the patients to the state hospital.…
Health care is a concerning worldwide topic in society, politics, and economics. There is a desire for the delivery of high quality health care and advanced technology services; but the resources required to fulfill this demand are scarce. Somewhere between government managed and private businesses, countries are able to provide their citizens with health care. Important services such as education, environmental protection, and social security are being compromised to pay rising health care costs (M. Lassey, W. Lassey, & Jenks, 1997. Many factors influence the health care system is delivered including but not limited to cost, quality, and access to care, and payment for services.…

Statistics have shown that when receiving treatment in a public hospital, there is a higher chance (“6.7%”) (Willis & Lewis, 2016) of something going wrong, for example: “contracting an infection, falling or receiving the wrong medication” (Willis & Lewis, 2016), compared to that in private hospitals (“4.1%”) (Willis & Lewis, 2016). Perhaps this is due to the higher demands of working in a public hospital and, as well as this, medical professionals, in particular, nurses, working in public hospitals are “increasingly working twelve hour shifts” (Stimpfel, Sloane & Aiken, 2012) plus “unplanned overtime” (Stimpfel, Sloane & Aiken, 2012). Extensive work hours and statistics similar to those quoted above may have lead to this stigma in not only my interviewee but also many other patients of the Australian healthcare system.…
They can focus more on patients and give them personalized assistance. Public hospitals are still a good choice to have if the patient does not have top notch insurance or want to save money. According to Pros and Cons of Private Hospitals (2018), “Because they are publicly funded and not for profit, they are usually a lot more affordable than private hospitals.” Since public hospitals cannot refuse service to anyone, they can always take you into their care. Public hospitals are more affordable and public hospitals are a good choice if you have…
