The Diligent was written by Robert Harms and discusses the fifteen-month voyage of the Diligent to Martinique, including the world of the Atlantic slave trade. In his book, Harms uses the recently “discovered” journal of First Lieutenant Robert Durand. The author of the book makes references to Durand’s journal as well as the overall Atlantic slave trade. The Diligent can be viewed as an accurate representation of what the Atlantic slave trade was like during the eighteenth century right down to the business of the slave trade, the voyage itself, and the middle passage. Most ships that European slave traders used on their voyages to go into Africa were owned by merchants similar to the Billy brothers.…

In the competitive world that we live in it is no surprise that education policy is in the forefront in all major producing countries of the world. Dr. Young Zhao, an author of many books on globalization and technology, uses his knowledge and background experiences within his book “Catching Up or Leading the Way: American Education in the Age of Globalization” to prove that America leads the way in innovative thinking, but must learn how to compete within a globalized world. Dr. Zhao uses research, ideology, and evidence to support his thesis that in order to survive in a global and digital competent world America must take emphasis off of high stakes testing and centralized curriculum. In order for American children to have successful lives within the 21st century I too believe like Dr. Zhao. We must continue to allow children to use their creativity and innovative thinking to build businesses of the future.…

There are many ways people define the term “laziness”. For example, as we discussed in class, we touched on how the older generations describe the younger generations as lazy due to the advances in technology that make what was once a difficult task an easy one to complete and out of jealousy. Laziness is viewed by many people as a negative characteristic to have, but after reading and analyzing Christopher Morley’s essay, we see how he views “laziness” and how he uses syntax and satire to achieve his purpose of why laziness is actually a good thing. Throughout the essay, Morley uses the literary devices to be convincing and humorous. For example, he begins the essay using satire saying “ Today we are intended to write an essay on…

The ways that it affects us can be different, sometimes procrastination doesn’t affect us too much, but other time it can cause major health risks such as, stress or depression. Recognizing this, Tim Urban presented a Ted Talk on procrastination and the dangers it can have. In his Ted Talk “Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator”, Urban used pathos with a minimal amount of logos and ethos to express his message to his to the audience. Urban also used pictures to support his use of pathos.…

Author and blogger, Tim Urban in his 2016 TED talk, “Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator”, argues that everyone is a procrastinator. Urban’s purpose is to explain in order to prove his final point that everyone is a procrastinator to some degree. Urban explains to the general public everyone is a procrastinator. This is a dilemma. Being assigned an assignment to write about my own life. There is one event in my life that overshadows the rest of it which is very obvious. It is one that would be extreme to anyone. That one event that occurred when I was a wee little boy at the young age of five was so grand that I have probably written and rewritten every aspect of it multiple times; sometimes even in the same school year.…

What does Leonardo da Vinci, Bill Clinton, and myself all have in common? Active participation in procrastination; a practice frowned upon in today’s society, but not even Noah of the Arc could prepare for the impressive amount of water that loitered on already heavily saturated carpets. A mini ocean within ones bedroom must lead to a rotten seed (Plant metaphors for the win!); one would think, but on the contrary! Delaying the much needed water proofing to our house, gave root to the independent adult I am today and is a direct catalyst for my transition from childhood to adulthood. Removing the optimistic filter, the flood damaged most of my possessions, left my room dangerous and smelling of mold, and devastated what I called “home”, but…

Procrastination is a serious discussion procrastination puts stress on the body, increases heart rate when the deadlines come close and increase the adrenaline being pumped. Does anyone know why people tend to procrastinate with anything and everything (with the exception of those special people who actually take care of business when its needed to be done)? Tim Urban’s TedTalk from 2016 about procrastination is directed towards everyone, and I mean everyone because according to him everyone is a procrastinator. His speech is intended to inform his audience what procrastination is, with pretty little pictures and characters including the Instant Gratification Monkey, Rational Decision Maker, and the Panic Monster. I agree to an extent with…

The Correlation Between Society and our Ambition Here in the United States, we live in the land of the bare-minimum. We pull into work moments before we need to clock-in, we count down the minutes before we get to leave, and we put off any projects we have to do away from work (or school) until the last minute. Why are we so inclined to do as little work as possible? What is so important to do that we can’t spare a few minutes to put a bit more effort in? The answer isn’t simple, but it lies within all of us.…
